White, soft pastels and light greys are some of the most popular colours for kids rooms and nurseries.  It’s not hard to see why – I mean who doesn’t love those colours and they’re easy to decorate with.  But if you’re after something a bit more unique, more striking or more daring, there is no better colour than blue – lots of it in deep, dark and bold shades (we’re not talking hints of blue or baby blue here!).  I’ve noticed a growing trend in blue kids rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and even kitchens and I’m so drawn to it.  There is something so cool and calming about this colour even in it’s darkest shade and so it’s ideal for any age, any gender and any space.

This is how to do no holds barred blue!  In a medium-dark blue, this kids room not only has blue walls but they’ve painted the furniture blue too – both wardrobe and desk and in slightly lighter shades of blue.  If you are drawn to blue then this is the way to do it.

Blue isn’t just for boys – but we already knew that!  In a lighter shade of blue, this girls room is fresh and fun.  Love how they’ve used a darker blue rug on the wall and lighter one on the floor to make all the blue in the room really stand out.

Don’t be scared of combining large amounts of bold and vibrant blues just like in the room above.  All the shades of blue used in this room are bold yet they come together to create a very cool space that would work just as well for a teenager or a threenager!

My most favourite shade of blue for interiors is petrol blue – it looks so dark and dramatic as you can see in the room above.  It brings a bit of mystery and magic to a room, especially for a kids room.  You can also brighten it up, if you wanted, with a pop of bright yellow.    

If full on petrol blue walls are too much for you,  this idea of painting half the wall is great to tone down the darkness but yet make an impact.  Of course you could do this with practically any shade of blue, not just petrol blue. 

If you just can’t move away from white walls but still want blue for your kids room, this is the answer – paint the floors blue.  A seriously cool way to add a lot of blue without it taking over.  There is a lot of blue in the room above yet with all that white, it doesn’t feel too much.

How awesome is this kids room?  I love how the deep, dark blue wall is given a light touch with the light blue diamonds painted on.  And the pops of red work so well too.  That’s the thing about most shades of blue – they work with so many bold and bright colours like red, yellow and green.
