black and white decor ideasWhat look do you go for in a child’s bedroom?  Black and white, bold colour, pastels?  Modern, vintage, minimal?  There are so many choices and styles out there to decorate a kids room that it’s hard to choose one style above all others.  I keep flitting from colour choices and styles I like and change my mind every day but eventually end up coming back to the whole monochrome Scandinavian vibe.  That is monochrome with pops of colour.  A little colour just makes the black and white even more dramatic and with a monochrome backdrop, no colour is off limits.  I can sometimes neglect the boys on this blog as some readers have pointed out to me recently (sorry!) so today I’m sharing some of the coolest black and white boys rooms with bold pops of colour:

Accenting with red in a boys room – how striking does that look?  Bright red is such a bold colour so you don’t need much of it and it looks so great.  Red is a pretty under-used colour in kids rooms and while a lot of red can be too much, just a little accent like this works so well especially in a black and white room.

decorating boys rooms with yellow

Hello yellow!  Another great accent colour for a black and white boys room.  The yellow is used very sparingly with lots of grey and it ends up looking so stylish.  Also I love the paper flower decorations in this boys room – would you consider these for a boys room?

Charming, playful and delightful are the words that come to mind looking at this lucky boys room.  The black and white in this room has been complimented with soft pastel tones.  Again the pastel doesn’t take over but just adds that little pop of colour.

In this bold black and white boys room, green is the accent colour.  But rather than stick to one shade of green, they’ve used a range.  I love the addition of an indoor plant which not only provides colour but is a lovely addition to a kids room.  Looking after a plant is a great little responsibility to give to a child, no?

shared room brothers decor ideas

I’m loving this cool shared boys room.  Shared by toddler and older brother it sticks very much to the black and white theme but with a hint of blue.  Using coloured furniture is a great way to introduce a little colour in to a black and white room.  And colours don’t always have to be bright – the muted blue here looks to perfect with the black and white.

decorating with mint green in kids rooms

A few weeks ago I talked about adding yellow accents to a kids room because yellow is such a cheerful and happy colour.   Another colour that I’m currently crazy about is mint.  It’s so fresh, so fun and like yellow works for both sexes and little babies too.   Besides, Spring and Summer are the perfect seasons to add a bit of minty green freshness in to your home.  Even if you’re not re-decorating, you can easily add a hint of mint in to any kids room or even your own to give it a fresh new look.  Mint beautifully compliments most colours and all styles of decor.  So if you want to add a little brightness and light, here are some ideas on decorating with mint green in a kids rooms to inspire you:

mint green for a baby nursery

Probably the easiest and quickest way to add a hint of mint to a nursery or kids room is by simply putting up some mint green art.  That large poster in the nursery pictured above adds a real breath of freshness to the room.  And even though there isn’t a lot of mint green in this room, the poster is so impactful that you don’t need more.

From a modern baby nursery to a vintage kids room – here is another easy way to add a splash of mint to a kids room.  Any old piece of furniture that needs updating can be painted in a mint green colour.  Often the furniture in a kids room gets the most wear so it’s the perfect excuse to freshen it up.

decorating with mint green

How gorgeous is this little girls room?  Here little mint coloured decorations have been dotted around which work so well with the whites, golds and pinks in the room.  From the soft toy with mint ears to the graphic mint blanket, it’s just little things like these that can add that splash of mint to a kids room.

decorating with mint green walls

If you want to go for a bolder mint green look, then paint the walls!  A room painted in mint from floor to ceiling may be a bit too much so instead, think about colour-blocking like in the beautiful nursery above.  The block of mint green goes so well with the pale grey, pink and darker green.  And colour blocked walls look so cool.

Yet another way of decorating with mint green is to add some mint bed linen like in this room above.  It’s the perfect way to add some Spring freshness and can so easily be changed every season.  I also love how they’ve used a rug with a tiny splash of mint which just makes the bedding stand out even more.  And also how great does mint look with deep, dark colours too?

decorating with yellow accents

Yesterday, my friend’s 70-something dad came to the school gates wearing yellow trousers and a purple sweater.  I can’t tell you how cool he looked!  I think yellow is such a striking colour but so under-used in clothing, in decor and everywhere.  I love kids in yellow and one of the best places to use yellow is in a kids room – boy, girl or baby room.  It’s a colour that transcends gender and age and above all it is such a happy colour.  In a kids room I wouldn’t go so far as painting walls yellow because for me a little yellow goes a long way.  But adding little yellow touches can quickly brighten even the dullest of rooms.  And any kind of decor – modern, vintage, retro – can benefit with a bit of yellow.  Here are some inspiring kids rooms that show how stunning decorating with yellow can be:

This baby nursery isn’t all about the yellow but just the smallest touches of yellow really brighten this room.  And the yellow works so well with the minty green too.

How cool is this room?  This room has the smallest yellow accents and yet the yellow adds so much cheer to the room.  This is a boys room but black, white and a little yellow thrown in is a winning combination for for any gender or age.

yellow bed in kids room

This is another boys room where the yellow comes in the form of the metal bed – such a great way to add your splash of yellow.  If you can’t find a yellow metal bed, you can always get a white one and paint it.  This vintage inspired room looks so fun and cosy and the yellow bed would work just as well in a girls room.

girls room decor ideas

How gorgeous is this girls room?  The yellow is used sparingly by adding just the odd cushion, storage basket and a few objects but that’s all this room needs.  The colour combination of soft pink with light grey and touches of bright yellow really is beautiful.

Last is this sweet vintage room which again uses lots of yellow decorations in different shades of yellow.  Imagine this room without the yellow – it would look quite bland.  The yellow brings the white walls to life but still doesn’t overpower.

Would you consider decorating with yellow?

I am constantly looking for beautiful kids room inspiration and now more so than ever as with our house move I need to decorate Anya’s new room in the next few months.  The one colour scheme I keep coming back to is the sleek and minimal Scandinavian style black and white.  Apart form the stylish looks of a monochrome kids room, black and white is the perfect backdrop to allow a kids room to grow with them.  I don’t want to re-decorate every couple of years so with this colour scheme you can add colourful cushions, posters and toys to get your pops of colour – as much or as little colour as you want.  As the child grows, you only need to replace these decor items and you can give the same room a completely different, more grown up look without too much effort.  Would you go for black and white for a kids room or too stark for you?  Once you see these inspiring black and white kids rooms that I’ve found, you might just change your mind:

Even the smallest touches of colour can really pop in a black and white room like those tiny little toys on the shelf.

If not colour, natural tones compliment black and white spaces really well.  Replace the cute wall decor with more grown-up stuff and this could easily become a teenagers room or even I would move in!

If you think black and white is boring, then think again – this room is anything but.  It combines colour and natural tones to create a really playful and fun space.

Just add one bold and bright colour to the mix like this black and white kids room with yellow accents.  With black and white as the main colours of the room, no other colour is off limits so you can always choose your childs favourite colour of the moment.

If you can’t do without lots of colour, then this room shows just how much colour you can add to a black and white space. Lots of red, yellow, green and blue all work so well against the monochrome walls and furniture.

These are my current favourite black and white kids rooms that are inspiring me right now.  Use a little bit of colour or lots of it;  either way you can create quite a stunning space.  And each of these rooms would grow with your child just by changing the decorations.  So do you think you would go for black and white?
