Whenever you think of re-decorating your rooms or just giving them a refresh, how often do you think of doing something with the floors? I know I tend to look at the walls or the furniture or even the decor because the floors somehow feel more fixed. But actually thats not true. You can change your floors really easily and sometimes that can be just the new look the room needs.
I’m loving the vinyl floor look which is no longer just for bathrooms. Vinyl flooring has come such a long way with so many more finishes, colours and patterns available. While I probably wouldn’t go for vinyl in every room in my home, I think they’re a great and fun option for kids rooms. Apart from being durable, they’re so easy to clean (goodbye paint stains!) and they allow you to have fun. Think stripes or checks or a sea of your favourite colour. I’ve been looking at some creative ways of using vinyl in a kids room and here are 3 fun ways:
There are so many styles and ways to decorate a kids room. When decorating it’s always worth keeping in mind that kids grow so fast. It feels like one minute they’re little babes in arms and the next, they’re telling you what to do! As they grow, their tastes change, their favourite colours change and so you don’t want to end up re-decorating every year or two. Whenever I’m asked for help on decorating a kids room, I discourage themed rooms as they don’t usually stand the test of time. Instead I suggest a neutral colour palette with decorations layered on top for a pop of colour and unique personality.
While I love Christmas, it’s all about the festive season everywhere so today for a change, I wanted to share something not related to Christmas. As many of you know we’ve been through a house renovation project this year and now we’re decorating our home. I’ve learned a lot in the process and I often get asked for advice especially in choosing colour schemes and styles. The next room that I plan to focus on is Anya’s room and so I thought I would share some of my tips on decorating kids rooms especially tips that will help the room stand the test of time. After all you don’t want to have to redecorate after a year or even two. These are very much the things that I am planning to keep in mind when I decorate Anya’s room so I hope they will help you too:
1. Don’t go for a themed room With kids rooms, often the temptation is to go for a themed room especially if your child is really in to something at the time. But even if your child is really in to a particular character or is crazy about dinosaurs, that can all change in months or even weeks. So a themed room isn’t likely to grow with the child.
2. Buy practical big furniture pieces that will stand the test of time The two biggest pieces of furniture in a room are usually the bed and the wardrobe. You don’t want to be replacing these in a hurry so think your options through. If your child is going to need a big bed soon, get one now or at least one that can expand in to a big bed when the time comes. Also what kind of wardrobe do you need – do you really need a big closed closet that may dominate the room? Kids are constantly growing so they have a pretty high turnover of clothing and shoes for a long time. Unlike us, they don’t grow their clothing collection year on year and hoard things from 1997 (or is that just me?!). So really think through the closet options – will a chest of drawers and an open clothes rail work better than a big wardrobe and also end up saving space?
A few weeks ago I talked about adding yellow accents to a kids room because yellow is such a cheerful and happy colour. Another colour that I’m currently crazy about is mint. It’s so fresh, so fun and like yellow works for both sexes and little babies too. Besides, Spring and Summer are the perfect seasons to add a bit of minty green freshness in to your home. Even if you’re not re-decorating, you can easily add a hint of mint in to any kids room or even your own to give it a fresh new look. Mint beautifully compliments most colours and all styles of decor. So if you want to add a little brightness and light, here are some ideas on decorating with mint green in a kids rooms to inspire you:
Probably the easiest and quickest way to add a hint of mint to a nursery or kids room is by simply putting up some mint green art. That large poster in the nursery pictured above adds a real breath of freshness to the room. And even though there isn’t a lot of mint green in this room, the poster is so impactful that you don’t need more.
From a modern baby nursery to a vintage kids room – here is another easy way to add a splash of mint to a kids room. Any old piece of furniture that needs updating can be painted in a mint green colour. Often the furniture in a kids room gets the most wear so it’s the perfect excuse to freshen it up.
How gorgeous is this little girls room? Here little mint coloured decorations have been dotted around which work so well with the whites, golds and pinks in the room. From the soft toy with mint ears to the graphic mint blanket, it’s just little things like these that can add that splash of mint to a kids room.
If you want to go for a bolder mint green look, then paint the walls! A room painted in mint from floor to ceiling may be a bit too much so instead, think about colour-blocking like in the beautiful nursery above. The block of mint green goes so well with the pale grey, pink and darker green. And colour blocked walls look so cool.
Yet another way of decorating with mint green is to add some mint bed linen like in this room above. It’s the perfect way to add some Spring freshness and can so easily be changed every season. I also love how they’ve used a rug with a tiny splash of mint which just makes the bedding stand out even more. And also how great does mint look with deep, dark colours too?
If you’re not in to bold, bright colours but on the other hand find white spaces too blah, pastels can work really well for your nursery or kids room. With pastels you can choose to go with just one tone keeping it more minimal or you can mix a range of pastel shades to create a more colourful room. Here are 5 pastel rooms to inspire you:
This is a beautiful minimal space by Aurelie Lecuyer with pastel walls that are complimented with pastel accessories like the bedding and cushions. I love how the colours don’t take over the room but instead it’s that vintage cot that really shines and everything else works so well with it.
