My little 3 year old is a hugely fussy eater so I’m always looking for ways to make food more fun and more appealing. Short of standing on my head, I think I’ve tried everything to make her eat. Not much has worked but I have found that making the food look good and giving it to her on a colourful, attractive plate helps a bit (that’s what I like to believe anyway!). So I’m always on the lookout for cool plates in the hope that it’ll make her eat more and my latest find is this 3 piece dinner set by Darling Clementine. I love the bold, bright orange complimented beautifully by aqua blue and pink. The little mouse is such a cutie too. If I was served dinner on this plate, I think I’d eat every last crumb.
Darling Clementine is a Norwegian design house that create the most wonderful stationery and goodies for the home. They combine fun illustrations with lots of bold colour and their unique style to make stuff that appeals to both kids and adults. This 3 piece kids dinner set is their latest creation called ‘Little wonders’ and it should be available to buy very soon. Also coming soon are 2 wonderful placemats that are part of the same series. If not for your own kids, this set would make a great gift. I know I’m seriously tempted.
A small soup bowl with a big story

Yesterday I came across Hoto, a small pottery studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They’re only a few months old and so far they make just one thing… this lovely soup bowl, but it’s not just about the bowl. It’s called Little Red Cap and it’s a bowl with a story. There are 4 different illustrations within the bowl that tell a visual Little Red Riding Hood type story but there’s more. The artist has brought the tale to life by creating a background of trees and wolves that come with the bowl. So while your little one is eating, you can set up the background and tell the story with the lovely props. I think the idea is so creative, so unusual, so lovely and I hope Hoto make more such themed plates and bowls. The packaging too deserves a mention… the round box with the hanging wolves is simple but very stylish. The sun has got his hat on, hip-hip-hip-hooray… as the song goes. It’s true, the sun has finally decided to grace our shores. And that can only mean lots of barbecues, picnics and al-fresco eating galore. So, I’ve been on the hunt for some melamine plates. My search ended when I found these Birds of Feather plates. How wonderful are they? They’re almost too good to eat from… almost! The rich colours and the beautiful images inspired by the outdoors combine to create true stunners. These Birds of Feather melamine plates are by Pocketo and cost $40 for a set of 4 and they offer worldwide shipping. Pocketo is a hot US based design shop with the philosophy ‘art for your everyday’, and I for one subscribe whole heartedly to this philosophy.

Ooh… another Scandi designer that’s got me gripped. This time it’s a lady called Pernille Vea from Denmark and she’s created this ‘Black Contour Kids’ tableware. So simple yet so stylish. Who’d think a black line with a small silhouette of a cat, snail and croc could be so impactful? This kids dinner set is modern and playful and it’s pretty cool too. The set includes a bowl, plate and cup and the plate can also be used as a lid for the bowl. To get the Black Contour Kids dinner set head to Panik-Design where it costs £25 with shipping at £6.95.
A little fishy on a dishy

When I spotted these fish plates I just couldn’t wait to share. They’re so cool (in a fishy kind’a way!). I’m loving the simple black hand painted illustrations against the cool white. Utterly uncomplicated, but then great design usually is. And their lovely looks may even make the kids eat their greens (not really, but I dream). They’re made in Barcelona by Susana Del Bano who also creates the most wonderful illustrations for kids.

Hana Blomst. A brand that brings together two cultures to create fabby kids plates, mugs and bowls. The delicateness and poetry of Japanese culture is married with hot Danish design and colour to create super wantable stuff to eat and drink from. I’ve just spotted the latest collection and I had to share. The bright coloured mugs with the simple animal graphics are oh so sweet. Then you’ve got the matching plates in white with just a splash of colour to bring them to life. And on the practical side, the mugs have lids to prevent little hands from spilling their drinks. The Hanna Blomst mugs and plates cost €14 each and you can get them at Smallable’s online store. The bad news: they’re not available till May (boo hoo!).

Smiley, happy plates for the kiddies

Lovely, happy, plates from Smiling Planet. Their mission: to make you smile and I’m definitely smiling wide. On offer are kiddy plates and bowls with whimsical drawings that are oh so light-hearted and fun. And they’re all earth-friendly too, made with recycled and recyclable plastic, free of all nasties like BPA, Lead, Phthalates and toxic inks. There’s many to choose from including a Ballerina Mouse plate and a Blue Whale plate, both of which are just fab. In the bowls section, I’m wantingly eyeing the music Lion one which immediately brought on a big smile. Vikings. Not something I think about but today I’m going a bit viking ga-ga. I’ve spotted these stylish melamine dinner plates that are the creation of Sandra Monat, a German lady big on contemporary style with a historical twist. I’m loving the illustrations of the vikings, they’re so cool, so contemporary, so cheerful. I’m especially keen on the black mustachioed one sheltering himself from the rain… how amazing is he?
The square plate is smaller costing £11.50 while the larger round ones (including my mustachioed friend!) cost £13.50 with delivery from £3.50. Will a dash of viking adventure mean more greens are chomped? No but I’m still vanting!
