Happy Halloween!  After trying a whole load of outfits, in the end Anya decided on being a cat or a cat girl.  The outfit was really easy to put together so if you’re still looking for a last minute costume idea, this is the one to go for.

"halloween cat DIY outfit"

To put this cat outfit together, all you need is charcoal or black tights and top (Anya wears a super soft charcoal polo neck sweater) or you can even go for any other dark colour like chocolate brown or navy.  Next cut some ears from card paper, paint them black and I have attached with simple bobby pins.  Then you need a mask which I have painted on with face paint or you make one from card paper.  Last, take a piece of black fabric or whatever colour your outfit is and roll it up to look like a tail.  You could use anything you have at home like a scarf or any piece of fabric.  And finally attach on to tights with a safety pin. Done! So what are your kids going as? I’d love to hear in the comments.

Have a very Happy Halloween!

I’ve never been a fan of face painting until I had a go myself.  I love it now – it’s such a satisfying thing to do. Who would have ever thought!  Have you tried it?  But I’m still not in to the versions where the whole face is painted or designs with lots of glitter and swirls – you know the kind I mean.  Keeping it simple with one or two colours is my favourite way.

So with Halloween coming up I’ve been asking Anya what she would like to go as.  Her latest obsession is pandas possibly because she has recently been given a panda soft toy.  So this week the choice was panda and I quite liked that it was something other than witches, ghouls and ghosts.  With Halloween costumes again, the simpler the better for me and I prefer the homemade kind rather than shop bought.  So armed with my face painting set,  I thought I’d have a quick trial run at transforming her in to a panda.  She was really happy with the look and may go as that to her Halloween party on Friday.  It’s far from perfect but that’s what I like about it and I think it’s pretty panda-ish don’t you?  Although Richard’s first comment as he walked through the door was ‘who’s that? Alice Cooper?!’

Have a great weekend full of silly fun!

P.S. Have you seen our all new shop?  It’s full of adorable clothes for girls and boys that you won’t find anywhere else in the UK.

"cape and mask sets for kids"

Even though Halloween is not as big here in the UK as it is in the US, it’s becoming more and more popular.  If I had to pick a celebration that Anya loves above all else it would be Halloween.  She even prefers it to Christmas.  I guess it’s the whole dressing up thing that makes it so exciting and also going out after dark to collect sweeties is such a treat for a kid.  I’ve been looking around for some fun costumes and I really liked these simple cape and masks sets that I came across.  As far as Halloween costumes go I prefer simpler stuff and stuff that can be re-used as part of dressing up play.  These capes and masks are all handmade in cotton and are perfect for boy or girl.  That little crown is so cute too.  Anya hasn’t yet decided what she wants to dress up as this year but I’m hoping it will be something simple.  What are your kids dressing up as?

P.S. Did you know that we have launched our very own kids clothing store?

Anya loves dressing up.  Like any 5 year old girl she is very in to the whole Disney princess thing but I’m relieved that she is equally keen to dress up as a pirate or a witch or her latest obsession of being a superhero.  That’s why she was delighted when she received this cute bunny superhero t-shirt with attached cape.  Of course she wanted to try it out immediately and we thought that it would be even more fun if we went the whole hog – with mask and tights and all.

With the caped t-shirt on and the mask painted, Anya took her superhero role very seriously!  Running through the park, jumping off wooden poles and even pretending to fly.

Being a girl superhero, Anya of course had to stop to collect daisies.   That’s what I love about these t-shirts by Le Macchinine Design – they’re great for boy or girl and they’re so comfy too.  So even though they can be for dressing up, they’re perfect everyday wear too.  We got the bunny one but there are cool foxes, lions and owls too.  It’s such a sweet and simple idea to attach a cape to a t-shirt and once worn, Anya took on a completely new persona.  I love clothes like these that encourage pretend play and allow a kids imagination to fly.

While superheroes always save the day, every once in a while, even they need a helping hand from their daddys!

Dressing up fun…

November 29, 2013

"kids dressing up ideas"We love a bit of dressing up fun in this house.  It doesn’t have to be Halloween, Christmas or any special occasion but instead it’s something my daughter Anya does daily.  The minute she’s back from school the uniform is off and she heads straight for her dressing up box.  Each day she emerges wearing something totally quirky and mismatched but she loves it and I love watching her delight in this.   So today I wanted to share some dressing up ideas and things that I’m currently loving.  My favourite… that little baby in those angel wings and a diaper.  Isn’t he the cutest?

Have a fun weekend!  And a very happy Thanksgiving to all my American readers.

"unusual halloween costume kids"This week’s picks for mama and baby… this Halloween, let mama make these bone shaped meringues while baby wears that fashion icon inspired Halloween costume.

Happy Halloween!

"beau loves autumn winter 2013"I’m in love with Beau LOves new Autumn Winter 2013 collection.  There’s drama and adventure in every piece.  With their signature mask motif and dark pieces mixed with yellows and golds, this collection is striking and so much fun for any kid to wear.  Imagine everyday clothes that can make you feel like a superhero or an adventurer; what more can a child want? "Beau loves autumn winter 2013"In addition to the clothes, there is a new black and white bed linen range with a tiny cat print and one with the mask print.  Both are very, very cool and the best bit about the entire collection… nearly all of it is unisex so everybody gets to enjoy the fun!  The British made collection isn’t yet available on Beau LOves own site but will be very, very soon.

Happy Friday friends and there’s a fab French giveaway coming on Monday!

"clown outfit for babies"I’m not a big fan of adult fancy dress parties.  I find them a bit of a hassle but even more than that I guess if I’m honest I hate being told what to wear.  But when it comes to kids fancy dress parties, I feel very differently.  I never go out and buy a ready made costume because where’s the fun in that?  Instead I love the challenge of putting together an outfit from my daughters existing wardrobe using a little bit of creativity and the help of a few accessories from her dressing up box.  So when I came across Korean photographer Dong Sun Choo’s work on the Waddler blog, I had to find out more."fancy dress for babies"I discovered that Dong Sun Choo gets clothes from some of my favourite brands like Oeuf NYC, Wovenplay, Waddler and adds accessories from Udder, Kate Davey and many others to create fun little fancy dress outfits.  He then dresses babies and little kids in these clothes and photographs them.  Apart from the cute overload, I love the little outfits and some of the expressions he captures.  One of my favourites is the adorable baby clown but I also love that over-sized stripey tail on that little baby boy.  To see lots more photos head over to Dong Sun Choo’s blog.

"linen superhero cape and mask set"Playing superheroes is something my daughter never tires of.  After all when you’re a superhero anything is possible.  Her self-assigned missions change frequently but her favourite is to rescue me from a pool of hungry crocodiles and thankfully she always saves the day (or my life!).  I haven’t yet got her a cape and mask set which I know she will love, but at the moment she is happy improvising with things she finds around the house.  When I decide to get her one I’m loving these gorgeous linen sets by Kathryn Davey.  Simple and stylish, the colours are really lovely too and there’s even a soft pink one for all those girly girls.  Kathryn Davey also makes those superhero soft toys.  I love that they too are made of linen and are so cute but never cutesy.  All the cape and mask sets and soft toys are handmade in San Francisco, making them even more special.

"girls silk satin bikini"What’s not to love about this wonderful new collection by Wovenplay for Spring Summer 2013?  Full of understated drama and whimsy coupled with that magical touch that only Wovenplay can deliver.  This may be my favourite ever Wovenplay collection but then again I think that about every new collection of theirs.

"dressing up clothes for girls"In every collection I usually have a favourite piece but here I’m struggling to choose just one or even two pieces.  Everything is divine from the silk satin bikini to the orange stripey sunsuit.   Truly magical stuff…

"purple girls swimsuit"I’m off to dream about adding a little bit of Wovenplay magic to Anya’s wardrobe…
