White, soft pastels and light greys are some of the most popular colours for kids rooms and nurseries. It’s not hard to see why – I mean who doesn’t love those colours and they’re easy to decorate with. But if you’re after something a bit more unique, more striking or more daring, there is no better colour than blue – lots of it in deep, dark and bold shades (we’re not talking hints of blue or baby blue here!). I’ve noticed a growing trend in blue kids rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and even kitchens and I’m so drawn to it. There is something so cool and calming about this colour even in it’s darkest shade and so it’s ideal for any age, any gender and any space.

Do you have an organised art space for your kids? When my 7 year old wants to get creative, which is nearly every day, I have to fetch art supplies from all over the place. I have some lying in boxes, some in her room, some in the living room – it goes on. While I love Christmas, it’s all about the festive season everywhere so today for a change, I wanted to share something not related to Christmas. As many of you know we’ve been through a house renovation project this year and now we’re decorating our home. I’ve learned a lot in the process and I often get asked for advice especially in choosing colour schemes and styles. The next room that I plan to focus on is Anya’s room and so I thought I would share some of my tips on decorating kids rooms especially tips that will help the room stand the test of time. After all you don’t want to have to redecorate after a year or even two. These are very much the things that I am planning to keep in mind when I decorate Anya’s room so I hope they will help you too:
1. Don’t go for a themed room With kids rooms, often the temptation is to go for a themed room especially if your child is really in to something at the time. But even if your child is really in to a particular character or is crazy about dinosaurs, that can all change in months or even weeks. So a themed room isn’t likely to grow with the child.
2. Buy practical big furniture pieces that will stand the test of time The two biggest pieces of furniture in a room are usually the bed and the wardrobe. You don’t want to be replacing these in a hurry so think your options through. If your child is going to need a big bed soon, get one now or at least one that can expand in to a big bed when the time comes. Also what kind of wardrobe do you need – do you really need a big closed closet that may dominate the room? Kids are constantly growing so they have a pretty high turnover of clothing and shoes for a long time. Unlike us, they don’t grow their clothing collection year on year and hoard things from 1997 (or is that just me?!). So really think through the closet options – will a chest of drawers and an open clothes rail work better than a big wardrobe and also end up saving space?
What is is about polka dots that is so appealing? I adore them and they are going to be a big part of decorating my new home. Polka dots on clothes are fab but they’re also so fun as decorations for any room in the house. You can use a few or lots, big ones or small ones, colourful or monochrome – they just work. There is no room that can’t benefit with polka dotted decor but I especially love them for a kids room – both for boys and girls. Decorating with polka dots is an inexpensive way to add a bit of fun and lots of style to a room and polka dots are so easy to decorate with as they go with any kind of decor. Big, black polka dot stickers decorate one side of this adorable room. The dots are just randomly stuck on to the walls – not in any pattern – making them even more interesting. And they also make the prints and the big round rug stand out more.

I love the clutter and chaos of this room – after all kids never keep their rooms looking perfect, do they? Here, among all the many toys, shapes and wall decorations they’ve gone for one simple wall of small polka dots. Even though there is so much happening in this room, the dots make a little statement of their own and totally add to the look of this room. Love it!
Gold is a colour so under-used for a kids room, especially a little girls room. One of the best ways to add a touch of gold is by using gold polka dot wall decals like they’ve done in the room above. The gold doesn’t take over but instead looks chic and stylish.
Even the most minimal of rooms can benefit with some polka dots like this minimal nursery. I love that they’ve used two different sized polka dots to make even more of an impact. This idea of using different sized dots can be brought to life in so many ways.
The best thing about decorating with polka dots is that there are no rules and no age limits. You can go as minimal or as full on as you like. Polka dots work with any decor and they’re such a simple way of adding a little chic, playful style to any room especially a kids room.
