I’m not talking about the odd pop of colour or a few complimenary shades – I mean rooms where there is practically every colour under the sun! Loft or attic rooms are the perfect space for kids. If you’re short on space with a growing family then converting your loft in to a kids room or playroom is the answer. It’s a lot cheaper than moving house and with a little thought, you can turn that unused loft space in to a super cool bedroom that the kids will be fighting over! It doesn’t even matter if the loft space is very small, it can still make a single bedroom and sometimes even a small space can accommodate two kids as you’ll see from these loft bedroom decorating ideas. Here are some awesome loft bedrooms to inspire you:
This loft bedroom is a tiny space but every inch of space has been used very well. The cupboard under the eves is great for storing all those toys and by using light colours, this room looks gorgeous and cosy instead of small and cramped.
This kids attic room is a far bigger space and makes the perfect room for two. It’s a boy and girl shared space and by placing the beds under the sloping parts of the ceiling, the space is maximised leaving lots of room for play.
This room is so striking! I love how they’ve used contrasting black and white to accentuate the sloped ceilings which gives such a dramatic look. And because the ceiling is so low, instead of wasting the space, they’ve cleverly put a mattress on the floor without a bed making such a cosy sleeping space for any kid.
This is another small attic room which has used the space so well. They’ve actually used the structure of the roof to make the bed area – how clever is that? Many people would probably overlook a small space like this in their home or use it as a room to dump stuff in but it makes such a lovely little bedroom for a child who after all doesn’t need the same headroom as adults.
The space under the sloping ceiling of a loft room is also a great space to put a desk as this room shows us. It creates an intimate little space to do homework or any desk work. If your loft room is going to be shared by two kids, this would be a great way of creating an individual little corner for each child.
This is a bit of a blurry image but I still wanted to include it because this is another great space saving way to place beds in a shared loft room. If you don’t have quite enough width to place beds side by side, this is the answer and will work so well in long and narrow loft spaces. I also love that the beds are under a big window – lots of scope for star gazing at night!
This adorable space is shared by two sisters. It not a big space but it’s still perfect for a pair of sisters. In a small loft room you can use a shared bedside table and then beyond the beds is a little play space. I can just imagine the hours of fun the two little girls have hiding out and playing in their cosy room (when they’re not fighting of course!)
Loft rooms feel like a kind of hideout and that’s why they can make amazing rooms for kids. Big or small, high ceilings or low any space in your loft can be turned in to an amazing kids space. Unlike basements, loft rooms are always bright because you can add plenty of windows to let in lots of natural light as the rooms above show us. And with such a wide range of roof windows available from places like VELUX you don’t even have to search too hard. All you need is a little imagination and you can create such a cool space for your kids. If not a bedroom then a think about creating a playroom to keep all those toys contained in one place. If I had a loft I would definitely be converting it in to a useable space but I’m just not sure whether I could give it to the kids!
A few weeks ago I talked about adding yellow accents to a kids room because yellow is such a cheerful and happy colour. Another colour that I’m currently crazy about is mint. It’s so fresh, so fun and like yellow works for both sexes and little babies too. Besides, Spring and Summer are the perfect seasons to add a bit of minty green freshness in to your home. Even if you’re not re-decorating, you can easily add a hint of mint in to any kids room or even your own to give it a fresh new look. Mint beautifully compliments most colours and all styles of decor. So if you want to add a little brightness and light, here are some ideas on decorating with mint green in a kids rooms to inspire you:
Probably the easiest and quickest way to add a hint of mint to a nursery or kids room is by simply putting up some mint green art. That large poster in the nursery pictured above adds a real breath of freshness to the room. And even though there isn’t a lot of mint green in this room, the poster is so impactful that you don’t need more.
From a modern baby nursery to a vintage kids room – here is another easy way to add a splash of mint to a kids room. Any old piece of furniture that needs updating can be painted in a mint green colour. Often the furniture in a kids room gets the most wear so it’s the perfect excuse to freshen it up.
How gorgeous is this little girls room? Here little mint coloured decorations have been dotted around which work so well with the whites, golds and pinks in the room. From the soft toy with mint ears to the graphic mint blanket, it’s just little things like these that can add that splash of mint to a kids room.
If you want to go for a bolder mint green look, then paint the walls! A room painted in mint from floor to ceiling may be a bit too much so instead, think about colour-blocking like in the beautiful nursery above. The block of mint green goes so well with the pale grey, pink and darker green. And colour blocked walls look so cool.
Yet another way of decorating with mint green is to add some mint bed linen like in this room above. It’s the perfect way to add some Spring freshness and can so easily be changed every season. I also love how they’ve used a rug with a tiny splash of mint which just makes the bedding stand out even more. And also how great does mint look with deep, dark colours too?

I will soon be decorating Anya’s new room and I am really leaning towards a vintage desk as I think it adds bags of charm and character to a kids room. The humble vintage desk can be mixed with any other style of furniture you have in the rest of the room – modern, retro, contemporary – whatever! But a vintage desk doesn’t always have to mean buying an old school desk and chair. That’s just one way to go for the vintage look but if you can’t find the right one or it’s not the right size for your space, there are other ways to create the look. Here are six vintage desk ideas that I’m loving for any kids room:
If you can find the right vintage school desk and chair for your room then go for it! It has so much charm and character and I especially love it set against black and white decor as in the room above. It’s simple and really allows the desk and chair to shine.
A kids desk doesn’t have to be an actual vintage desk. In case you can’t get your hands on one almost any used table will do, like in this picture above. It’s looks like a used white table and an old, worn chair which together create a vintage feel that’s complimented with all the vintage inspired decorations – so lovely and fun.
If you’re going for a vintage desk look, there is no reason why you can’t totally customise your look like this seriously cool desk above. Using vintage wood, leather belts and lots of creativity, they’ve made a very cool desk and complimented it with a vintage stool. Also, customising your desk means that you can fit it in to any sized space you like.
If your desk space needs to have room for two kids, you could of course get two mismatched vintage school desks which would look really cool or you can do something like they have done above. Trestle style tables are all the rage at the moment so getting your hands on a vintage one probably won’t be too difficult and paired with vintage chairs, it looks great. Lots of character, lots of charm and a nice spacious desk for two.
Remember those chunkier vintage school desks that had the lift up lids to store stuff? They can sometimes look very heavy especially in a small room so I love what they’ve done here. They’ve removed the legs and screwed the desk bit to the wall and paired with a vintage stool. You still get the whole vintage desk vibe but in a modern, fresh and uncluttered way.
For just a touch of vintage, you can get a vintage chair and pair with any desk including a brand new modern one. In the picture above, I love the simplicity of the space. A simple shelf has been used as the desk and paired with a vintage chair all brought to life with that colour blocked wall. This look, like many others, really can fit in with any style of decor you choose for the rest of the room.
So a vintage desk for a kids room doesn’t always have to be an old school desk. Of course if you can find one then it’s a great option but I also love how the kids spaces above have taken the idea of vintage and made it their own. I don’t yet know what look I’ll choose for Anya’s room but I’m feeling so inspired by all the ones above that it’s hard to pick a favourite. Do you have a favourite?
When you think of decorating a kids room, I think your mind instinctively goes to white and bright colours. I’ve been thinking a lot about colours for Anya’s new room which I will be decorating as soon as the builders are out of our new home. My initial instinct was to go with lots of white and add touches of pink and grey, maybe black too. But recently I have been coming across darker and dreamy kids rooms and I am loving them more than I thought possible. There is something so magical about these rooms that bright colours just don’t bring. Each of these rooms are different but the one thing they have in common is that dreamy canopy which I want for Anya’s room. So now I am re-thinking the whole thing. Here are some magical kids rooms all with that dreamy must-have canopy that are really inspiring me at the moment:
This was the room that first inspired me. This room is a styled room as are many below but the overall look can be recreated in a kids room and how magical would it be. Right from the choice of the bear poster to the dark wall. I absolutely love it – of course you could choose any dark tones, not stick with blues and greys. I’m thinking dark greys and deep, dark and dusky pinks for Anya. This room has been created by a Norwegian Interiors shop called Olen Mobel.
What a dreamy room! Not as dark as the first one but this room has bags of magic and personality. This is certainly not your typical decor for a girls room but I love it so much with the choice of wallpaper, the ornate gold frame and the rug. It’s also a room that your little girl won’t outgrow in a hurry. This beautiful girls room is totally inspiring me right now!
Another inspiring and magical kids rooms. There’s something about all these rooms that transports you to an imaginary world where anything feels possible and what could be better for a kids space? The concrete floor may be a step too far but I love the rustic clothes hanger, the vintage metal bed the colour tones in this room.
Soft greys perfectly compliment the dusky pinks and whites in this magical girls room. Of course the massive windows complete the look but sadly we can’t all have those. I love the addition of the vintage desk and the decor balls casually hung at the end of the bed. And of course that beautiful canopy just completes the look.
All of these rooms feel like you’ve stepped in to a fairytale but not in the traditional way. They feel like a magical world where anything is possible and I can’t think of anything more appropriate for a kids room. A lot of the decor in these rooms is by Numero74 and they are the best kids decor brand that I have come across to add that magic touch to a kids room. What do you think? How do you keep your kids room tidy? Whenever I tidy up Anya’s room, it’s a complete mess a few hours later. It really makes me lose the will to tidy. I’ll admit that before we moved house I had reached the stage where I just closed her room door so I couldn’t see the mess and i would leave it like that for days and sometimes even weeks. Now that we’re renovating our new home and Anya will have an all new room, I want to make sure that it remains tidy and not like the mess in the picture below (I can’t believe I’m sharing this pic but this shows how bad things got!)
Apart from looking at the mess which troubles me, a messy room means that we often spend hours looking for stuff – especially things like little toys, game counters and lego pieces. With our fresh start I want to ensure that her room is neat most of the time and I also want to make sure that she is the one who tidies it. The best way to do this is to have a specific place for everything and so I’ve been seeking out fun but useful toy storage solutions. Anya’s new room is quite small so I also want toy storage ideas that work for small spaces. I’m not a fan of plastic boxes or anything modular and also I thinks toys should be tidy but visible because they add fun and colour to a room so I’ve had to dig a bit deeper to find some quirky and fun storage ideas. Here are 5 that I’m loving:
This is such a fun way to store those soft toys. Wire baskets cost pennies so you can have as many as you need and they also make really quirky wall decorations. I love these circular ones but you could get bigger rectangular ones which will store even more soft toys. So much more practical then lining up the toys on the bed which is what Anya used to do and then each night they were thrown all over the room!
You know all those teeny tiny toys that always get under your foot and seem to make their way in to every single room in the house? Yes, those annoying little toys can be housed in a shelf like this. A shelf with lots of little shelves and you can even wallpaper the backs to make it pretty like they’ve done here.
Nothing beats toy storage sacks and storage baskets. You can get such cute ones which look great in a kids room and the best part is that they allow you to tidy up in a hurry. Also they are great for all those toys that you can’t find any other home for. I will definitely be getting at least a couple of these for Anya’s room and I’ll be getting them from here.
Coat hooks aren’t just for coats – you can hang so much stuff on them. In a small room, instead of having a dressing up box that takes up floor space, coat hooks are a great alternative. They can hold a lot of stuff and the stuff is all very easy to get to. And I love the idea of having the cute dressing up stuff on display.
Using an outgrown or unwanted piece of furniture like an old cot is another fun idea for storage in a kids room. Even a moses basket that is no longer in use would make a great storage solution. You can use it to keep so many things like soft toys, games or books. And it looks so much cooler than boring chests of draws or plastic storage boxes. Even if you don’t have one you could find a vintage crib in a junk shop which will look even better than a modern piece.
With all these fun and creative toy storage ideas, I am really hoping the days of mess will be behind us. I’m especially loving the coat hook idea and the wire baskets for Anya’s room. When it comes to shared kids rooms, bunk beds are the easiest option especially when space is limited. But I’m not a fan of most bunk beds. Apart from the safety thing, with a few exceptions, I’m just not crazy about how they look. Instead I think two beds look so much nicer and often look cosier. With a little imagination and thought, you can fit them in, even in small bedrooms. I went looking for some shared room inspiration and here are my favourite finds:
This small shared kids room sounds like it was a real labour of love. The room is only 10 x 12 feet so the mum didn’t want the beds taking up the whole room. Instead she wanted them against one wall which left playing space even in this small room. As the beds needed to be shorter then regular singles, they made them and even built in storage – the top panels of the beds can be lifted and the bottom panel acts like a storage box.
This eclectic shared kids room is bursting with fun and personality. By using mismatched beds, each child’s area is effortlessly separated without looking like you have two separate areas. The quirky decor across the room brings it all together and it looks so great too. This kind of decor is so perfect for a brother and sister shared space too.
This is another small shared kids room. By placing a large rug in the room, the whole room is brought together in a cheerful and cosy way. The beds are the same but by using different colours each kid has their own side. In small space like this one, a single bedside table is another way of making the best use of the space.
This is a room shared by brothers. While it looks more spacious than some of the other rooms, the space is still maximised by putting the beds at right angles to each other. This gives a big playing space in the middle, perfect for two little boys. I like the simple decor as well ensuring that the room grows with the boys and you don’t have to redecorate every couple of years.
This has got to be one of the most fun shared kids rooms I came across. This room is shared by brothers but it could equally be a unisex shared room or even a room for sisters. Apart from the cheerful black and white decor with pops of yellow, the idea of using shelves as a headboard is great. There’s no need for bedside tables and you get a lot more storage space.
I am constantly looking for beautiful kids room inspiration and now more so than ever as with our house move I need to decorate Anya’s new room in the next few months. The one colour scheme I keep coming back to is the sleek and minimal Scandinavian style black and white. Apart form the stylish looks of a monochrome kids room, black and white is the perfect backdrop to allow a kids room to grow with them. I don’t want to re-decorate every couple of years so with this colour scheme you can add colourful cushions, posters and toys to get your pops of colour – as much or as little colour as you want. As the child grows, you only need to replace these decor items and you can give the same room a completely different, more grown up look without too much effort. Today, lets take a break from the Christmas gift lists and look at some kids room inspiration. We are moving house next week (eek!) and the new place needs to be done up from scratch. It hasn’t been decorated in 40 years! So my brain is swimming with all kinds of decor ideas which I’ve been collecting on my pinterest boards including ideas for Anya’s new room. While I can’t seem to move away from the whole black and white colour scheme, I’m liking the idea of adding an extra pop of colour especially for a kids room. Recently I came across the above room and it really inspired me to think about red as the extra colour. Have you ever considered red for a kids room? It’s not a colour I would choose as a main one as too much red can be overbearing for me but if used sparingly with lots of white and some black, it can look quite striking. And red is a great colour for boy or girl so it would be a great choice for a shared room too. Here are some of my favourite rooms with pops of red:
As these rooms show, you can add splashes of red in many different ways; one piece of red furniture, red bedding, red toys or even just a bold red poster that stands out will do the trick. Because red is such a bright and vibrant color, you don’t need a lot of it to make an impact. In the third picture I love the blue, black and white colour scheme which works so well with the bright red poster – something a bit different for a boys room. And in the last picture just the smallest red accents look so great. I am really liking this colour scheme for a kids room and maybe this will be the one for Anya’s room. What do you think?
