black and white decor ideasWhat look do you go for in a child’s bedroom?  Black and white, bold colour, pastels?  Modern, vintage, minimal?  There are so many choices and styles out there to decorate a kids room that it’s hard to choose one style above all others.  I keep flitting from colour choices and styles I like and change my mind every day but eventually end up coming back to the whole monochrome Scandinavian vibe.  That is monochrome with pops of colour.  A little colour just makes the black and white even more dramatic and with a monochrome backdrop, no colour is off limits.  I can sometimes neglect the boys on this blog as some readers have pointed out to me recently (sorry!) so today I’m sharing some of the coolest black and white boys rooms with bold pops of colour:

boys room decorating ideas

Accenting with red in a boys room – how striking does that look?  Bright red is such a bold colour so you don’t need much of it and it looks so great.  Red is a pretty under-used colour in kids rooms and while a lot of red can be too much, just a little accent like this works so well especially in a black and white room.

decorating boys rooms with yellow

Hello yellow!  Another great accent colour for a black and white boys room.  The yellow is used very sparingly with lots of grey and it ends up looking so stylish.  Also I love the paper flower decorations in this boys room – would you consider these for a boys room?

Charming, playful and delightful are the words that come to mind looking at this lucky boys room.  The black and white in this room has been complimented with soft pastel tones.  Again the pastel doesn’t take over but just adds that little pop of colour.

In this bold black and white boys room, green is the accent colour.  But rather than stick to one shade of green, they’ve used a range.  I love the addition of an indoor plant which not only provides colour but is a lovely addition to a kids room.  Looking after a plant is a great little responsibility to give to a child, no?

shared room brothers decor ideas

I’m loving this cool shared boys room.  Shared by toddler and older brother it sticks very much to the black and white theme but with a hint of blue.  Using coloured furniture is a great way to introduce a little colour in to a black and white room.  And colours don’t always have to be bright – the muted blue here looks to perfect with the black and white.

monthly gift boxes for kids

Did you know that in Finland every expectant mother gets a baby box as a gift from the government?  The box contains all the newborn essentials she’s likely to need including clothes, bath products, nappies, a sleeping bag and even a mattress.  This is such a lovely idea and for those of us not in Finland I’ve always thought it would make a great gift idea for a mum to be.  It’s as if Almondella, a Finnish company read my mind because that’s exactly what they’ve done but taken it a step further.  They’ve put together a range of monthly gift boxes for kids that aren’t just for newborns but for babies and toddlers.

Now they’ve gone even further and partnered with Peggy (the super stylish blogger behind Paul et Paula) and together created this great box of delights.  Peggy thought why are these boxes for babies only, why not for older kids too?  So she put together a gift box that is unisex and perfect not only for babies but for all kids up to 6 or 7 years old.  The box contains fun decor items that will work in a nursery, a playroom or a kids room.

childrens colouring books

Peggy kindly sent me a box for Anya and when I opened it there was much excitement from Anya and me.  Anya was immediately drawn to the iconic elephant money box (which needs no introduction) and the Evolution colouring book.  The Evolution colouring book is a colouring book but so much more too.  As well as colouring in the pages there are more interactive elements like flaps to lift, die-cut holes and stencils that can be drawn through and decorated.  And then there is text that describes the evolution of life.  So the book is fun to read, interact with and colour.

I was excited with all the bits that will work so well in Anya’s new room but my favourites are the animal poster and the wall sticker.  The black and white animal poster has been created specially for this box so it’s not available elsewhere.  And then you have a wall sticker – either ‘You are loved’ or ‘Grow Strong’.  You don’t know which one you’ll get so it’s a nice little surprise.  Lastly you have the cute sleepy hedgehog cushion.

I’m always looking for exciting and unusual gift ideas and this box would make a beautiful gift for any child.  It’s a box of things that will grow with your child and they can keep for ages.  And the best part is that you pay much less for all the things in the gift box than if you had bought them separately.  This box is limited edition with only 50 boxes but I hope Peggy and Almondella will make more such boxes in the future because I so love the unisex, ageless aspect of it and of course the stylish Scandinavian delights inside it.

Beanie on helina…

January 22, 2014

"cloud cushions for kids"

It was the name – Beanie on Helina – that first got my attention.  It’s such an unusual name for a shop.  I discovered a stylish and sweet world of cushions that include clouds, houses and raindrops.  Beanie on Helina is a Finnish shop by Kaisa Erkkila and you can totally see the stylish Scandinavian vibe.  The name is inspired by a story Kaisa’s dad told her when she was a kid about a temperamental little girl who wore a beanie.  In addition to cushions, Beanie on Helina also offers some cool home wares like cloud pot holders (which would also look nice on a kids room wall), pouches and jewelry.

"H&M baby bedding collection""H&M baby quilts and blankets""H&M baby bedding collection"Who doesn’t have a little soft spot in their heart for H&M?  Even if you don’t, once you see this cuteness I don’t think you’ll be able to resist.  This baby collection of bed linen, towels, toys and more is just the sweetest.  Those elephant cushions are so adorable and so is all that starry bedlinen.  If you haven’t discovered H&M’s home collection for babies yet, check it out because I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

"black and white wallpaper"If you read my post on Ferm Livings latest collection, you will know that I am obsessing over the whole black and white Scandinavian interiors look.  I so badly want to create my own version of this look in my living room but can’t for practical reasons.  My only hope is moving house but it seems a bit excessive to move just because I want to re-decorate the living room!  So while I wait I’ve been dreaming of how I would decorate, and this black and white wallpaper by Fine Little Day is one of my favourites.  In my next home I know I’ve got to have this somewhere.  The same print also comes as a baby blanket and a cushion cover both of which I love too.  I went looking around the web to see rooms where this blanket, wallpaper or cushion has been used and these were some of my favourite black and white rooms:

"black and white nursery""black and white kids room""black and white scandinavian decor"Isn’t this wallpaper so striking?  It just brings all these rooms to life.  I love the nursery at the top which is nearly all white but has that stunning feature wall.  I also love the last picture where this wallpaper has been used to frame a door.  And the 2 pictures in the middle show the blanket and cushion which are so chic.  Have a happy weekend!
