vintage school desk ideas kids room

This week I am taking a break from my photography series but it will be back next Wednesday.  In the meantime you can look at the past photography posts as there are already lots of great hints, tips and tricks to help you take better photos and there’s even a giveaway (ending today).  Instead today I’m feeling inspired by these gorgeous vintage desk spaces for a kids room.

I will soon be decorating Anya’s new room and I am really leaning towards a vintage desk as I think it adds bags of charm and character to a kids room.  The humble vintage desk can be mixed with any other style of furniture you have in the rest of the room – modern, retro, contemporary – whatever!   But a vintage desk doesn’t always have to mean buying an old school desk and chair.  That’s just one way to go for the vintage look but if you can’t find the right one or it’s not the right size for your space, there are other ways to create the look.  Here are six vintage desk ideas that I’m loving for any kids room:

vintage school desk ideas

If you can find the right vintage school desk and chair for your room then go for it!  It has so much charm and character and I especially love it set against black and white decor as in the room above.  It’s simple and really allows the desk and chair to shine.

vintage white desk for girls room

A kids desk doesn’t have to be an actual vintage desk.  In case you can’t get your hands on one almost any used table will do, like  in this picture above. It’s looks like a used white table and an old, worn chair which together create a vintage feel that’s complimented with all the vintage inspired decorations – so lovely and fun.

If you’re going for a vintage desk look, there is no reason why you can’t totally customise your look like this seriously cool desk above.  Using vintage wood, leather belts and lots of creativity, they’ve made a very cool desk and complimented it with a vintage stool.  Also, customising your desk means that you can fit it in to any sized space you like.

 vintage desk for two kids

If your desk space needs to have room for two kids, you could of course get two mismatched vintage school desks which would look really cool or you can do something like they have done above.  Trestle style tables are all the rage at the moment so getting your hands on a vintage one probably won’t be too difficult and paired with vintage chairs, it looks great.  Lots of character, lots of charm and a nice spacious desk for two.

vintage desk with lift up lid

Remember those chunkier vintage school desks that had the lift up lids to store stuff?  They can sometimes look very heavy especially in a small room so I love what they’ve done here.  They’ve removed the legs and screwed the desk bit to the wall and paired with a vintage stool.  You still get the whole vintage desk vibe but in a modern, fresh and uncluttered way.

small space desk ideas

For just a touch of vintage, you can get a vintage chair and pair with any desk including a brand new modern one.  In the picture above, I love the simplicity of the space.  A simple shelf has been used as the desk and paired with a vintage chair all brought to life with that colour blocked wall.  This look, like many others, really can fit in with any style of decor you choose for the rest of the room.

So a vintage desk for a kids room doesn’t always have to be an old school desk.  Of course if you can find one then it’s a great option but I also love how the kids spaces above have taken the idea of vintage and made it their own.  I don’t yet know what look I’ll choose for Anya’s room but I’m feeling so inspired by all the ones above that it’s hard to pick a favourite.  Do you have a favourite?

"vintage furniture and toys for kids"

This is probably one of the best vintage shops I have come across.  They have a lovely selection of vintage toys and furniture for kids as well as some stunning vintage pieces for the home too.   That vintage child’s desk is stunning in it’s simplicity as is that ride-on wooden car.  Most of the pieces in this shop are one of a kind and very hard to find.  If you love vintage furniture then I highly recommend this vintage shop.

A vintage workspace…

"vintage kids desks"Next week is going to be a big week in this house as my daughter Anya starts school for the first time ever.  She’s very excited by the idea of going to ‘big’ school and I am also very excited for her.  But my excitement is tinged with a bit of apprehension as I feel she’s only 4 and how will she manage in big school.  Of course I know she will as they all do but still the first day is going to be a huge bitter sweet moment for me.  With all this talk about school I started thinking about school desks.  Anya probably doesn’t need a desk yet but I found some inspiring vintage kids workspaces on pinterest that I wanted to share.  I think having a vintage desk and chair adds a lot of charm and character and I’d definitely go for vintage over modern when I create a desk area for Anya.  If you’re looking to set up a little workspace for your kiddo then these spaces will hopefully inspire you.  My favourite is the first one but I also love the vintage desk that has been adorned with white polka dots.

"vintage furniture for kids"My parents never kept any of my baby toys or clothes.  This never mattered to me until I had a child and now I really wish they had.  My father was in a job where he moved countries every 3 to 4 years so when the time came for us all to up and go, big clear outs were inevitable.  And besides I think my mother is a bit of a divester.  She’s never been one to hoard her possessions and loves getting rid of clutter.  But she did keep one adorable little vintage chair that was used by her and her sister when they were babies, then by my brother and me and now it’s Anya’s.  Anya loves being told stories about her mama using the chair.  That’s the wonderful thing about good vintage furniture and toys… they can be passed down from generation to generation and they gather so many wonderful memories along the way.

I love the thought of passing down furniture and toys but if you don’t have your own, the next best thing is finding a good vintage shop.  And today I wanted to share my latest find – Roger Bontemps.  It’s a new French vintage shop that looks super promising.  Their online doors aren’t even open yet but should be opening in the next week.  They will be selling vintage kids furniture, toys and more but they have also created their own small line of vintage inspired clothes, bed linen and accessories.  I couldn’t find too many pictures but I liked what I did see especially that rattan crib and the bed linen in it.  Can’t wait to see more…

A vintage dream…

"vintage baby crib"

I’m always dreaming of how I’ll decorate the next house we move to.  We have no plans to move right now but that doesn’t stop me.  My most frequent daydream is about my daughters room.  I change my mind daily about which pieces of furniture I want for her room, but I never change my mind about the style of decor.  It’s going to be vintage; possibly vintage with modern accents but mostly old.  And today I’ve found a shop where I’m lusting after all their vintage furniture.  From their school desks, to kids chairs and even their vintage cribs {though I don’t have a tiny baby}, I want it all.  I mean how gorgeous is that pink crib?

"vintage rattan crib"

And then there’s this minty green child’s desk and chair set… luckily it’s sold otherwise I might have been on my way to France to buy it!  L’Atelier du petit parc really do find some exquisite pieces but since they’re all one off’s they get sold quite quickly.  They do keep getting new pieces so it’s a question of checking back regularly.  Visit their shop to see all that’s currently available while I go off to daydream some more.

Vintage wonders…

"vintage bench for kids"

I really love that the vintage trend is here to stay and we’re now spoiled with all the choices on offer.  Vintage furniture has bags of charm and character and for me it’s always a winner.  These pieces are from a lovely French boutique who have a very small but beautiful selection of vintage furniture for kids.  The low wooden bench with the bright yellow or pink mattress is a versatile piece that was crafted in Latvia around 30 to 50 years ago.  It would look super stylish in any kiddy space but is light enough to be used in the garden in summer too.

"vintage rattan cot crib"

This vintage rattan cot is another winner.  The shape is open and welcoming, almost resembling a flower in bloom… so beautiful, so poetic.  And then there are some sweet little chairs on offer that would make charming additions to any kids room.  All the pieces are carefully selected but many are one-offs so when they’re sold, they’re sold.  Head to Les enfants du design to see their entire collection.
