Have you noticed the cool cactus home decor trend?  I don’t mean just the actual cactus plants, although they are pretty amazing too and a great option, if like me, you aren’t green fingered.  For now I mean the cool cactus prints popping up for all kinds of home decor stuff.  The almost sculptural shape of cacti lends itself so well to all kinds of things for the home.  When I finish decorating my home, I know I’m going to be adding a few cactus home decor touches and definitely some real cactus which make stylish indoor plants.

While I love Christmas, it’s all about the festive season everywhere so today for a change, I wanted to share something not related to Christmas.  As many of you know we’ve been through a house renovation project this year and now we’re decorating our home.  I’ve learned a lot in the process and I often get asked for advice especially in choosing colour schemes and styles.  The next room that I plan to focus on is Anya’s room and so I thought I would share some of my tips on decorating kids rooms especially tips that will help the room stand the test of time.  After all you don’t want to have to redecorate after a year or even two. These are very much the things that I am planning to keep in mind when I decorate Anya’s room so I hope they will help you too:

1. Don’t go for a themed room
With kids rooms, often the temptation is to go for a themed room especially if your child is really in to something at the time.  But even if your child is really in to a particular character or is crazy about dinosaurs, that can all change in months or even weeks.  So a themed room isn’t likely to grow with the child.

2. Buy practical big furniture pieces that will stand the test of time
The two biggest pieces of furniture in a room are usually the bed and the wardrobe.  You don’t want to be replacing these in a hurry so think your options through.  If your child is going to need a big bed soon, get one now or at least one that can expand in to a big bed when the time comes.  Also what kind of wardrobe do you need – do you really need a big closed closet that may dominate the room? Kids are constantly growing so they have a pretty high turnover of clothing and shoes for a long time.  Unlike us, they don’t grow their clothing collection year on year and hoard things from 1997 (or is that just me?!).  So really think through the closet options – will a chest of drawers and an open clothes rail work better than a big wardrobe and also end up saving space?

donna wilson aw15 collection

I have been a huge fan of all things Donna Wilson for a long time.  If you already know Donna Wilson, you’ll know that her designs are always colourful and playful.  The designs are just as much for adults as they are for kids which is what I love about her creations.  So I wanted to share some of my favourite pieces from her gorgeous new AW collections.  How cool is that women’s bear shawl?  It’s a super cute shawl but I also love it as a rug or a throw on a kids bed.  And the new melamine plates and bowls are really quirky too like that hungry wolf tray which I love for adding a bit of fun to my kitchen.  Now back to the giveaway.

ways to display kids artwork

What do you do with all of your kids artworks?  Do you find it piles up so quickly that it gets out of hand?  The art in our home is produced daily which is fabulous on the one hand but on the other I really don’t know what to do with it all.  I’ve always displayed some of it by putting a few pieces on our fridge and blu-tacking others on to a wall (which kept falling off) in the kitchen and then I would change them every couple of months for newer pieces.  I save a few others in a folder and the rest go in the bin at night (naughty mama!).  But it’s impossible to keep all of your kids artwork so I think you have to be selective.

display kids artwork frame

With our new home which we are renovating from scratch I want to be more organised.  Our new fridge will be built-in so I won’t be able to display any art on it.  And besides I want to make a dedicated and permanent space for Anya’s art, not treat it like an afterthought.  So while I was hunting for ways to display kids artwork I came across these slot-in picture frames.  They are designed specially for kids art and come in a range of sizes to accommodate one or more pieces of art.  The frames themselves are very simple so they really allow the art to stand out and can also be used no matter what your decor.  I’m thinking of having an entire wall in a hallway or in the kitchen filled with these frames to make a colourful and fun gallery wall.  But what I love most about these kids art frames is how easily you can slot in new pieces of art.  No tape, no blu-tack, no constantly falling off the wall, no mess, just drop it in and change as and when you wish.  These kids artwork display frames don’t solve the problem of what to do with all the art but they are a fab idea for displaying your favourite pieces easily.

If you have some other ideas for displaying and storing kids artwork, do share in the comments.
