Little Flea – what will you discover?

When I was a kid, I remember visiting London for a holiday and my parents took me and my brother to Hamley’s toy store for the first time. It was like a dream come true. We were small, wide-eyed kids who couldn’t quite believe a shop like this existed. We had only ever been to small toy shops before, so to see this kind of scale was almost too much for us. Everywhere I turned, there were toys and games that went from floor to ceiling or so it seemed to me. Toys that I could touch and feel and smell! We weren’t allowed to buy much – we were each given a small budget but that didn’t matter. It was the looking, the exploring, the touching and the just being there that was the best part. I also think it would have been quite boring if we had unlimited budgets because where’s the fun in being able to buy everything.

Sometimes I think back on that experience and wish that all the brands I love for kids would be under one roof. These days I am much more in to the non-mainstream stuff which can sometimes be hard to find and almost impossible to find under one roof. While I keep dreaming about this fantasy shop that will probably never exist, I’ve discovered a virtual place that comes pretty close. It’s called Little Flea and it’s a one-stop place to discover some of the best boutiques for babies and kids.

If, like me, you like to look beyond the mainstream and seek out something that little bit more beautiful or unique for your kids then Little Flea is the place to go to. You’ll find familiar favourites like Bobo Choses and of course my very own ebabee shop too 😉 but you’ll also discover some very cool new lines like Little Indians (love them) and Magnus & Mouse. Little Flea isn’t a shop but the owner Anna carefully hand-picks and features gorgeous stuff for babies and kids which otherwise would be very hard to find. So it’s a great place to browse, discover and get inspired.

A pretty pastel room

I know I’m usually a cool monochrome and minimal person but there is one colour trend that I am feeling very drawn to especially for a kids room or a nursery. Extra bright or neon type colours can feel too overpowering for me so if I was going for a colourful kids room it would have to be beautiful soft pastel shades. Pastel shades work so well for babies, boys or girls and they can even work for a shared unisex room. The colours are soft and calming and that should help the kids sleep better (ok that maybe me being over optimistic!). Thinking about pastel kids rooms I went looking for some inspiration to put together a mood board that will hopefully inspire you too. So if you’re thinking about pastels, keep reading for some tips on how to decorate with pastel colours.

I wanted a range of colours in the room because I think different pastel shades mix so well. I wanted to create a feature wall or a focal point so I started with that abstract cloud wallpaper which has all the pastel shades mixed in so well. This wallpaper is part of a range by Wallpapered that you can customise to your exact dimensions making it perfect for a feature wall. But if you had a particular pastel image or print in mind, Wallpapered also offer a make your own wallpaper service so you can really use anything you like and make it absolutely unique to you.

Next I picked out three shades within the wallpaper that I really liked which were a mix of pastel pink, green and blue. I think three main colours is the perfect number to give a nice variety of shades without it becoming too much. I kept the bed neutral as beds are a focal point in a room and a pastel bed would have been a bit of an overkill. But while the bed is clean and neutral, you can always add pastel bedding like I’ve picked. Also keeping lots of white in the room actually helps the pastel shades to stand out. I then picked out accessories in my three chosen shades and lastly I added a garland that has all the pastel shades which makes it all come together. The most exciting part of our house renovations is about to begin. We are nearly done with all the building stuff and soon to come is the furnishing bit which is the part I have been waiting for. One of the rooms I am most excited about doing up is Anya’s room. Since I will be doing the room from scratch, I have a blank canvas and that both excites me and makes me nervous! I have already got Anya one of these as I knew I wanted her to have some sort of play tent/hideout. One of the things I am keen to get absolutely right for her room is bedding and recently I came across a beautiful new London based range that ticked all the boxes – comfort, style and natural materials.

Camomile London’s range is so pretty! So soft, natural and simple. One of the things I like most about this range is that you can mix and match colours, textures and patterns to create your own look. Mix a bit of pale ivory with bright coral or how about going bold with indigo and mustard? Apart from the kids bedding, there is also a nursery bedding range which is equally gorgeous and some sweet little cushions and accessories to go with the bedding. Black, white and beautiful!

Ever since I can remember I’ve been drawn to minimal, simple, monochrome style. When Anya was born and someone wanted to gift me a blanket for her, they asked what colour I wanted expecting a reply like pink or yellow. My reply was off white or black and white. My mum was horrified! Horrified that I was subjecting my child to a colourless life! But you know what – black, white and neutral tones can be so stunning in a kids room just like these decorations show us. I can’t help but be drawn to things like that cat poster and that gorgeously simple pear pillow. They can always be mixed with pops of colour so you can add as little or as much brightness as you like. I won’t be giving up my black and white obsession any time soon so I’ve found some gorgeous black and white kids room decorations to share with you:

Kids room inspiration: indigo and petrol blue

With my current house renovation project I seem to be spending half my life on interiors sites, pinterest and browsing through interiors magazines. I’m definitely not complaining! Recently I’ve noticed a bit of a trend for using deep, dark blues in interiors like indigo and petrol blue. These deep blues are not colours you find everywhere so they are still quite unusual and really stand out. While they look great in dining rooms and living rooms, I think these blues would look equally fabulous in a nursery or kids room – for boy or girl. So I felt inspired to put together a mood board for a kids room using various shades of deep blue with touches of lighter blue.

One of my first ports of call for finding cute things for kids rooms in the UK is Petit Home one of my sponsors. Pretty pink and grey nursery decor

When you think of a baby nursery, you probably think of colours like white, yellow, powder blue or pink. The one colour that probably doesn’t come straight to mind is grey and yet it’s such a fantastic colour for a nursery. It can be mixed in with any other soft colour to create a calming atmosphere. My favourite colour combo right now is dusty pink and lightish grey. I can’t seem to move away from these two colours together so I thought I would go looking for some pink and grey nursery decor ideas and here’s what I found. I’m especially loving that three little pigs mobile – so cute!

Eye-catching Danish design for the home

Have you seen the stunning new Spring/Summer 2015 collection from Oyoy? Oyoy is a Danish interiors brand for kids and adults and in true Scandinavian style, they make bold and beautiful cushions, soft toys, blankets, bedding and more. From the new collection for kids, it’s the soft toys that are really standing out for me but then again the adventure rug (pictured second from top) and the circle rug are very cool too.

The soft toys aren’t just toys but cushions too so they’re equally good for playing with or decorating with. These are the kind of playful cushions that I wouldn’t even object to having in my living room – especially that turtle! Then there’s the adventure rug in striking black and off white which would be so much fun in any kids room. And the circle rug – simple, minimal but so eye-catching. Forget the kids, I want that for my room over some light wooden floors. While I’m lusting after their kids stuff, their grown-up things are equally lust-worthy so they’re worth checking out too. I’m just glad I have a whole house to do up soon so I may just have an excuse to indulge in some of this!

Sweet and stylish polka dot bedding

Character themed or over colourful kids and baby bedding just doesn’t do it for me. I personally prefer children’s bedding to be as simple and minimal as possible but that doesn’t mean it has to be just black and white. I totally appreciate that a few carefully chosen colours thrown in can work really well. That’s why I’m loving this new collection of baby and kids bedding from Australia. Tiny little polka dots in charcoal or neon pink adorn the sheets which are complimented with a beautiful two-tone blanket. There’s also a sheet with little yellow hearts that is quite adorable for baby boy or girl. And then for older kids you’ve got the dotty sheets with matching duvets which can also be paired with the two-tone blankets. Very simple, very classy.

Apart from these stylish bedding sets for kids, also on offer are some unusual and fun prints. What I love most about the prints is that they really are for any age – from little babies to adults. Many of the prints compliment the bedding sets really well or would be a great way to add pops of colour to an all white nursery or kids room. Of all I think I’m loving that quirky dog print and the charcoal polka dot linen is just lovely too. In fact I would be tempted to go with both together for a boys room.

Polar bears as we all know are one of the most dangerous creatures on earth but they look completely the opposite. They look so soft and furry, cuddly and cute that it seems impossible that they could harm. Dangerous or not, they do make adorable decor for a kids room. They lend themselves to all kinds of kids stuff from bedding to cushions and so much more.
