How to create a fun gallery wall

Gallery walls are all the rage and they look great. I’m considering one for my living room but I think they look fab in any room especially a kids room where you can have so much fun creating one. It’s a great way to update a room that needs a bit of life or to just change the look for a new season. The most obvious way to create a gallery wall is to have loads of shop bought framed prints but there are other creative ways and the best part is that gallery walls don’t cost much to create. Things like kids artworks make a great a gallery wall or you don’t even have to use art. Some of the cutest gallery walls I’ve seen use objects and decorations and even clothes. Here are some fun and unusual ideas on how to create a gallery wall in a kids bedroom:

I love this monochrome nursery wall. Lots of fun, quirky, interesting postcards, shapes and more simply taped to the wall with washi tape. There’s no order here, they’ve just stuck lots on but I love that and because they’ve kept the tones the same it makes it even more striking. Best of all, there’s lots for the baby to look at.

A cool cactus collection

Have you noticed the cool cactus home decor trend? I don’t mean just the actual cactus plants, although they are pretty amazing too and a great option, if like me, you aren’t green fingered. For now I mean the cool cactus prints popping up for all kinds of home decor stuff. The almost sculptural shape of cacti lends itself so well to all kinds of things for the home. When I finish decorating my home, I know I’m going to be adding a few cactus home decor touches and definitely some real cactus which make stylish indoor plants.

Simple and striking wallpapers for kids rooms

One of the easiest ways to refresh a room is to add some wallpaper either as a feature wall or even wallpaper the entire room. It’s usually not expensive to do and can change the look of a room in a few hours. I’m a big fan of wallpaper for any room but especially for a kids room. I usually prefer to stay away from anything too bright, colourful or themed as you want the wallpaper to grow with your kids. One of the best ways to ensure this is to go for a playful yet subtle print in black and white or natural tones. These kinds of wallpapers will stand the test of time often from babyhood to much, much older.

When planning a kids room, I always recommend choosing stuff that will grow with your child. I’ve previously written some tips on how to design a room your kids won’t outgrow but today I wanted to share some of the cutest black and white wallpapers for a kids room that will stand the test of time. The cutest decorations {for any room}

With our new home renovations coming to an end, it’s now time to start thinking about the decorating – about the furniture, the little objects and the personal touches that will turn this place from a house in to our unique home. This is the exciting bit and the bit where we get to be creative and have lots of fun. One of the things I am very keen to do is to have a playful element in all our spaces. I don’t want strictly grown-up zones and separate kid zones. I don’t think we live like that anymore so every space in our home will be shared between the adults and the kids and I want this to show through in the decor.

I am not talking about toys strewn all over the living room or turning the dining table in to a kids craft centre, but instead picking out cute little objects, cushions and artworks that will work alongside the more grown up pieces. One of the shop’s I’ve got my eye on to bring some kiddy cuteness in to my home is Eef Lillemore (don’t worry, I don’t know how to pronounce it either!). They have some of the cutest decorations I’ve seen and I’m especially loving that panda tray for my kitchen and why not an ice-cream cushion for my living room? And what about a few of those pastel posters for the bathroom?

Everybody needs a little dose of cuteness in their home and when you have kids, it’s the perfect excuse to introduce it in to every room. I wouldn’t even object to some of that cloudy wallpaper in a hallway – so subtle and sweet. Of course a lot of the stuff at Eef Lillemore would make such fun decorations in a kids room too – like those beyond adorable posters! Something guaranteed to make you smile each morning, so why not have a little touch in every room?

A pretty pastel room

I know I’m usually a cool monochrome and minimal person but there is one colour trend that I am feeling very drawn to especially for a kids room or a nursery. Extra bright or neon type colours can feel too overpowering for me so if I was going for a colourful kids room it would have to be beautiful soft pastel shades. Pastel shades work so well for babies, boys or girls and they can even work for a shared unisex room. The colours are soft and calming and that should help the kids sleep better (ok that maybe me being over optimistic!). Thinking about pastel kids rooms I went looking for some inspiration to put together a mood board that will hopefully inspire you too. So if you’re thinking about pastels, keep reading for some tips on how to decorate with pastel colours.

I wanted a range of colours in the room because I think different pastel shades mix so well. I wanted to create a feature wall or a focal point so I started with that abstract cloud wallpaper which has all the pastel shades mixed in so well. This wallpaper is part of a range by Wallpapered that you can customise to your exact dimensions making it perfect for a feature wall. Next I picked out three shades within the wallpaper that I really liked which were a mix of pastel pink, green and blue. I think three main colours is the perfect number to give a nice variety of shades without it becoming too much. I kept the bed neutral as beds are a focal point in a room and a pastel bed would have been a bit of an overkill. But while the bed is clean and neutral, you can always add pastel bedding like I’ve picked. Also keeping lots of white in the room actually helps the pastel shades to stand out. I then picked out accessories in my three chosen shades and lastly I added a garland that has all the pastel shades which makes it all come together. Bring out the animals!

Animal themed decorations are so lovely for a kids room. Even if you don’t go for the whole hog animal theme, a few touches here and there are so fun. Of course you can choose colourful versions of animal decorations but I’m in love with these kind of natural tones for a nursery or kids room. I know some people think brown/beige/sand type colours are boring for a kids room but just look at these decorations – nothing boring here. All of these would look great in any colour scheme but I love the idea of combining lots of white with natural tones like these.

Black, white and beautiful!

Ever since I can remember I’ve been drawn to minimal, simple, monochrome style. When Anya was born and someone wanted to gift me a blanket for her, they asked what colour I wanted expecting a reply like pink or yellow. My reply was off white or black and white. My mum was horrified! Horrified that I was subjecting my child to a colourless life! But you know what – black, white and neutral tones can be so stunning in a kids room just like these decorations show us. I can’t help but be drawn to things like that cat poster and that gorgeously simple pear pillow. They can always be mixed with pops of colour so you can add as little or as much brightness as you like.
