I love polka dots. I recently bought a peachy-pink clutch bag with black polka dots {you can see it here} and this purchase just reminded me of how much I love this simple pattern of lots of little circles. While I love it on clothes and bags, I think decorating rooms, especially kids rooms, with polka dots is a great idea too. So I went on the hunt for some cool polka dot adorned rooms and these were my favourites:
Love this random scattering of neon dots. It’s quirky and fun.
A cute way to add polka dots to a little girls room and you could even buy plain lanterns and dot them yourself.
Finally, go for a whole wall of teeny tiny dots that works in both an adults and a kids space.
Minimalism, especially in kids clothes, always grabs my attention. 1 + in the family is a new brand from Spain that expertly combines minimalism with practicality and comfort. They offer a small range of stylish and wearable clothes for 0-24 month old babies. I’m loving the combination of stripes and solids as well as the bold pink in the collection. 1 + in the family is the creation of Gemma Mases, a freelance designer who launched her first collection at the same time as her little niece was born late last year. It’s only available in Spain so far but I’m sure it won’t be long before it hits the rest of Europe.
I had my birthday in January. Nothing unusual about this except January is the bleakest month of the year in this part of the world. So it’s really not a good month for a birthday but this year at least I managed to escape for some winter sun. Growing up in Mumbai, January was the best month to have your birthday. Most Indians don’t celebrate Christmas so there was no Christmas hangover to speak of, it was a new year, the weather was at it’s best and everybody was on a high. How the tables have turned on me! But as bleak as January is, come the 1st of February and it feels like everyone has a renewed vigour, a spring in their step, a positive outlook once again. For me the 1st of February brings with it the hope of Spring and that’s what makes it special. Today, it feels like the worst of winter is over and so to celebrate the coming of Spring I wanted to share my first Spring 2013 collection with you. It’s a new brand from Sweden called Gabor & Friends and they make the most wonderful bed linen for babies, toddlers and kids.
Stylish, sophisticated kids bed linen is hard to come by and that’s why when I saw Gabor & Friends I couldn’t wait to share. On offer are duvet sets, blankets, crib bumpers and cushions. The prints, like the bird one, are so pretty but the solid colours of sea green and salmon are equally appealing (my favourite I think is that Purple Rain snuggle blanket). Most of the tones and shades used in Gabor & Friends’ Spring collection are soft, muted and understated except their cashmere-wool blankets that come in the boldest and brightest of colours. Many of the pieces are 2 sided – a print on one side and a solid colour on the other giving you the option to change the look as you please. I’m so loving this collection and looking at it really makes me feel like Spring is in the air. Gabor & Friends don’t sell through their site but you’ll find their cashmere blankets at the lovely Scandinavian Minimall who will soon be stocking the rest of the collection.
How cute are these guys? I don’t normally get excited about finger puppets but I couldn’t help falling for these ones. Made by Ayelet from Israel, it feels like she has taken all that is cute and lovable about these animals and brought it to life in her creations. And the extra little touch of the knitted hoodies just adds to their cuteness. You’ll find kangaroos, squirrels, pandas and camels in her collection which also includes mobiles and display boxes in addition to finger puppets. They’re all handmade from 100% wool and can be bought individually or in sets, but for me it’s the affectionate little pairs that are the sweetest. I found out about Lazy Animals a while ago when I received an email and I have been meaning to share ever since as they’re just too adorable to miss!
When I was a kid I remember my mum getting my brother and me an Indian liberty print quilt each. We both got so attached to our quilts that we would take them with us everywhere we traveled. I’m sure that hadn’t been part of my mothers plan as taking two bulky quilts everywhere is far from ideal but we wouldn’t be parted from our beloved quilts. When my quilt had to be washed my mum always made sure it was dried within the day as sleeping without it wasn’t an option (thanks mum!). I don’t know what it was about the quilt that made me so attached to it… the tiny floral print, the muted colours of pink and mint green, the softness of the fabric or was it just a comforter of sorts? Even though at the time I had no clue what a Liberty print was, I now know that is my earliest memory of owning something in this wonderful fabric.
Since then of course I have bought several Liberty print things and have a real love for the fabrics so it’s no wonder that I was drawn to this new collection of bed linen, pillows and soft bean bag type seats for kids. The collection has been created by Cam Cam especially for the lovely boutique Mimi’s Circus. While the entire collection is made using liberty print fabrics, it’s the little neon cloud detail that adds that extra special touch. I’m not normally a fan of bean bags but I think my favourite part of this collection is those bean bag type seats. It’s a collection that will appeal to both kids and adults and that always gets my vote.
I’m finally back from my wonderful holidays but have had a rather hectic Monday morning. So I thought I would do a quick Monday post and share this charming vintage tricycle with you. As you know, I do love a good vintage find and fell for this tricycle the minute I saw it. It’s from the 1920’s and looks beautifully made. I’m sure it would be as much of a joy to ride as it is to look at.
Every time we have a play date, the one thing my daughter and her friends always ask to play with is her circus tent. I set it up and in they disappear. They often have tea parties in the tent and I supply biscuits as it pleases them no end. But otherwise they just stay in there with a few select toys and all I hear is squeals of delight. I think it’s the whole idea of having a hideout, a place where the adults are unlikely to come that really appeals to them. All children love this kind of play and I even remember loving it as a kid where me and my brother would make tents out of sheets and chairs and play under there for hours. I still think the best way to play ‘tents’ is to make your own hideout but if you want a ready made hideout then I love these ones by Such Great Heights.
From Australia, these Wonder Tents are covered in lovely geometric fabrics, plain fabrics or in some retro inspired ones which are my favourites. They fold up and come with their own carry case so can be stored and moved around easily. Which kid wouldn’t delight in owning one of these? Such Great Heightsalso make some adventure capes which would add to the whole pretend play fun but I think it’s these tents that are the stars of the show.
Accessories can really make an outfit. I recently bought a dress for my daughter which can only be described as a very plain A-line dress in burgundy. It’s the kind of dress that you would probably pass over on the rail, let alone buy. But it came with a detachable pearl studded collar that really made the dress. Since it’s removable, the collar can be used on any plain top or dress to bring it to life. I think I actually bought the dress just so I could have the collar. This dress just showed me again how the right accessories can completely change an outfit and even add a bit of drama or whimsy to any look. Now I just need to remember to accessorise myself more often! But that aside, I went looking for more accessories for little girls and these were my favourite finds. I love them all but that dramatic feathered hairband is just so cool. Here’s where you’ll find them:
