What is is about polka dots that is so appealing?  I adore them and they are going to be a big part of decorating my new home.  Polka dots on clothes are fab but they’re also so fun as decorations for any room in the house.  You can use a few or lots, big ones or small ones, colourful or monochrome – they just work.  There is no room that can’t benefit with polka dotted decor but I especially love them for a kids room – both for boys and girls.  Decorating with polka dots is an inexpensive way to add a bit of fun and lots of style to a room and polka dots are so easy to decorate with as they go with any kind of decor.  Here are 7 inspiring rooms that show us just how to make polka dots work:

polka dot decorations for a bedroom

Big, black polka dot stickers decorate one side of this adorable room.  The dots are just randomly stuck on to the walls – not in any pattern – making them even more interesting.  And they also make the prints and the big round rug stand out more.

polka dot bedding kids

From big, black polka dots on the wall to bold polka dot bedding.  I love this shared boys room which mixes different graphic shapes and bold colours so well.  The black polka dot bedding really pops against those bright yellow shelves.

If you prefer having a little colour in the room, polka dots are great for doing just that.  Like in this little boy’s nursery above, a few bright dots can add a splash of colour to a room and also these dots really make that cute toy shelf stand out.

polka dot wall decals for kids room

Big and colourful polka dots work just as well for a bolder statement.  Instead of a headboard this simple washi tape house shape is brought to life with those multi-coloured dots.  I love how the dots have been added to the chair as well to complete the playful look.

I love the clutter and chaos of this room – after all kids never keep their rooms looking perfect, do they?  Here, among all the many toys, shapes and wall decorations they’ve gone for one simple wall of small polka dots.  Even though there is so much happening in this room, the dots make a little statement of their own and totally add to the look of this room.  Love it!

gold polka dot wall decals

Gold is a colour so under-used for a kids room, especially a little girls room.  One of the best ways to add a touch of gold is by using gold polka dot wall decals like they’ve done in the room above.  The gold doesn’t take over but instead looks chic and stylish.

decorating with polka dots

Even the most minimal of rooms can benefit with some polka dots like this minimal nursery.  I love that they’ve used two different sized polka dots to make even more of an impact.  This idea of using different sized dots can be brought to life in so many ways.

The best thing about decorating with polka dots is that there are no rules and no age limits.  You can go as minimal or as full on as you like.  Polka dots work with any decor and they’re such a simple way of adding a little chic, playful style to any room especially a kids room.

"luxury baby bedding""luxury baby bedding boy""polka dot bedding for toddlers and kids"

Character themed or over colourful kids and baby bedding just doesn’t do it for me.  I personally prefer children’s bedding to be as simple and minimal as possible but that doesn’t mean it has to be just black and white.  I totally appreciate that a few carefully chosen colours thrown in can work really well.  That’s why I’m loving this new collection of baby and kids bedding from Australia.  Tiny little polka dots in charcoal or neon pink adorn the sheets which are complimented with a beautiful two-tone blanket.  There’s also a sheet with little yellow hearts that is quite adorable for baby boy or girl.  And then for older kids you’ve got the dotty sheets with matching duvets which can also be paired with the two-tone blankets.  Very simple, very classy.

"colourful prints for kids bedroom walls"

Apart from these stylish bedding sets for kids, also on offer are some unusual and fun prints.  What I love most about the prints is that they really are for any age – from little babies to adults.  Many of the prints compliment the bedding sets really well or would be a great way to add pops of colour to an all white nursery or kids room.  Of all I think I’m loving that quirky dog print and the charcoal polka dot linen is just lovely too.  In fact I would be tempted to go with both together for a boys room.

"bobo choses summer 2014 UK"

You may have come across this new Bobo Choses Summer collection but if you haven’t, it’s unmissable.  I’m especially loving all the bold cross, dot and lip prints.  I mean how cute is that dotty baby jumpsuit and the crosses bloomer?  Just adorable.  In the UK you can find a selection at the stylish Orfeo Design boutique.

mama & baby…

"polka dot cushion"This week’s picks for mama & baby… let mama wear these polka-dotted knee high socks while baby decorates his room with that spotty cushion.

"polka dot dress for girls"I’ve already mentioned before how much I love Pola & Frank, a new-ish mama and kids brand from Poland.  So when they sent my daughter Anya this wonderful black and white polka dot dress in the post, we couldn’t have been more delighted.  I love polka dots and so does Anya.  This dress has quickly become a hot favourite in her summer wardrobe.  Thank you to Judyta & Paulina – the two mama’s who are the creative force behind Pola & Frank

"girls polka dot dress"The other week my daughter and I were out shopping when she spotted a multi-coloured polka dot dress that she absolutely fell for.  It wasn’t something I would’ve chosen but since she was so keen on it, I felt bad to deny her.  If I’m completely honest, I am not very good at letting my daughter choose her own clothes because I am very fussy!  I live in fear of the time when she wants to wear purple and pink from head to toe and those days will come very soon.  With this dress I think it was the many different coloured polka dots that drew her in and while I do love polka dots, I much prefer simplicity, subtlety and just 1 or 2 colour tones.  But thanks to her love for the dress, I remembered this black and white polka dot dress by Pola & Frank that I had seen and loved.

"baby pink tunic dress girls"

"girls wrap hoodie"Pola & Frank are a fairly new brand of simple and stylish clothes for kids, tweens and women.  When I saw this Spring/Summer 2013 collection I fell for it.  Very wearable and practical for kids, yet so stylish with the ribbon details and the muted tones.  Also, their collection for mama’s looks easy to wear without compromising on style and they do have a cool selection for boys too.  Pola & Frank are from Poland, a country which is creating some amazing designs at the moment and I am so happy to have discovered them.  I love all the pieces in this collection but if I had to choose a favourite, it would have to be that black & white polka dot dress which may just mysteriously replace the multi-coloured one we have!

P.S. I’ve been interviewed on the cool honest mum blog today… read it here.

Dots and stripes…

"organic baby onesies bodysuits"Last month while I was in India I went to see my cousin’s baby who is just 6 months old.  She was absolutely adorable with her huge eyes and cheeky little grin.  While I was there she was taken in for a bath and came out wearing a simple striped bodysuit looking all fresh and smelling of that wonderful ‘just bathed baby smell’.  I don’t often get broody but that special baby smell did it to me!  I realised that it’s been a while since I’ve featured something purely for the tiniest little ones and so I went looking and couldn’t resist these delicious onesies and booties.  Simple stripes and polka dots in the freshest colours make for lovely Spring essentials.  They’re made by Nature Baby exclusively for J. Crew and are made of organic cotton and 100% chemical free materials so are perfect for a babies delicate skin.  If only I had seen these before I think I would have been unable to resist the the bright yellow polka dot booties and matching onesie.
