"black and white kids rooms"

I love pairing black and white.  Be it in fashion or interiors, these 2 just work together like magic.  I don’t think I’d ever be bold enough to decorate a room using only these 2 colours, even though the end result can be quite stunning.  But the thought of using them as a backdrop and adding bright pops of colour really appeals to me.  And that’s why I fell for the kids room pictured above.  The all white room has been complemented with lots of black and then there is an abundance of colour in practically every shade under the sun.  That’s the best bit about a black and white backdrop – absolutely no other colour is out of bounds.

After finding the first room I felt very inspired and continued hunting to see what else was out there.  I soon stumbled upon this wonderful room which again has the same backdrop complemented with lots of colourful bits and pieces.  Both these rooms can be for boy or girl and would be super easy to re-decorate when the time comes.  The only problem with finding beautiful kids spaces like these is that it makes me want to re-decorate my daughters room each and every time…

"cute art for kids"I vividly remember the first piece of art that my parents bought for my room.  I was allowed to choose and I picked a colourful painting of a sweet little girl in pigtails.  The painting was very simple even though it had many little details.  The girl was smiling and looked so carefree and happy that I guess I imagined seeing myself in her and that’s what probably attracted me to it.  When I saw this work by Ekaterina Trukhan it reminded me so much of that painting and it took me right back to my childhood filled with happy memories.  I was instantly drawn to her work and really wanted to share it here.

"ekaterina trukhan illustrations"Ekaterina’s drawings are used for children’s books, calendars, parenting magazine articles and more.  I can see the appeal of the illustrations for both adults and kids as there is humour as well as a sense of playfulness to her work.  The illustrations for children remind me of what childhood should always be about… laughing, singing, dancing, playing and just having lots of fun.  Whereas the ones for parents are funny and very telling.  I love the one where the confused child is being pushed into every kind of extra-curricular activity possible; don’t we all know parents like that?!  Originally from Russia, Ekaterina Trukhan is now based in London and you can see her portfolio on her site.  She also has an etsy store where she sells prints, calendars and other sweet little things adorned with her drawings.  {The etsy store is currently closed for holidays but check her blog for the latest news}.

"stylish looks for girls"

Since I started writing this blog, one of the questions I get asked most often is what is my favourite store for kids clothes.  The honest answer – I don’t have a favourite.  With so many wonderful kids clothes out there, it’s impossible to choose just one store or brand.  And besides mixing and matching is what fashion is all about.  Also, to me it doesn’t matter where I find the clothes, be it in a bargain store or a high end one; the most important thing is to like it.  So in answer to the question I thought I would show a few of my daughters outfits from the past few months and share where they came from.  I hope you like them.

1. Ballerina dress by H&M… 2. Orange cardigan coat by Anthropologie… 3. Pink tutu by Katz dancewear… 4.  Soft blue/green dress by Norlie… 5.  Red jeans and leather jacket by Zara and shoes by Ben Simon… 6.  Dusty pink dress by Pale Cloud and leggings by Zara.  All bangles necklaces and other accessories from India.

P.S. Last Friday I was honoured to be interviewed on a fab US blog. You can see the interview here.

With love, from Japan…

"wooden toys from japan"

Japan has held a fascination for me for as long as I can remember.  Right from the days of my early childhood when my father would travel to Japan on work and bring back all kinds of cute little stationery, toys and even some delicious Japanese snacks.  Even at that young age I felt there was something so special about everything my father brought back.  I couldn’t understand why I was so drawn to these Japanese things but I always knew they were different.  I remember that I would sometimes carefully stash these toys away as they were just too precious to play with in case they broke.

"japanese wooden toys"

Over the years this fascination never waned and I finally visited Japan in 2007.  It was one of my best holidays ever for so many reasons (amazing food, architecture, people, street fashion) and of course shopping.  It wasn’t about buying but just seeing beautiful things and exquisite packaging at every turn.  Of course I had to indulge in some shopping (cue extra suitcase back!) but I so enjoyed the window shopping too because Japanese design is such a treat for the eyes.  The design style is often very simple, very minimal which is what makes it so stunning just like these wooden toys.  The toys have been stripped down to basics and then designed from there and the result is quite beautiful.  The little train set is just wonderful and perfect for little hands too.  I love the use of natural wood that has been enhanced with just a hint of soft colour.  Buchi toys don’t have a big range; just 5 toys but each one is a piece that I would happily have on show in my home and I think any little kid would delight in playing with.

Wonderful winter woolies…

September 18, 2012

"alpaca wool kids clothes"

There’s definitely a nip in the air which means it’s time to start getting your winter woolies out and maybe even buying a few more.  While summer is my favourite season, I do look forward to winter fashions the most, not just for me but for the little one too.  There’s one British brand that I’ve wanted to share with you for a long while and with the weather turning, I couldn’t wait any longer.  They’re called Waddler and they create wonderful woolies for babies and kids with a keen eye on design and lots of playful touches that make the clothes immensely wearable and immensely cute.

"baby alpaca wool clothes for babies"

All made of 100% baby alpaca wool in Bolivia,  Waddler’s creations are quirky, playful and stylish without any of the over-cuteness that you can find in baby clothes.  There isn’t a piece in the collection that I don’t like.  Their colours too are lovely with lots of soft grey’s, sandy browns and off-white’s complimented by bolder colours like teal and bright red.  Most of their clothes are unisex making them great for passing on from one sibling to another.  I could go on and on about wonderful Waddler but I’ll leave you to discover the rest over at their site.

Tame those tresses…

"pretty hair clips for girls"

I love little girls with long hair even though getting those knots and tangles out can be a huge battle.  My daughter is growing her hair and has the sweetest little curls in them but we’re now at a point where those tresses need to be tamed.  So I started hunting for some hair accessories and found the sweetest ones over at Hello Shiso.  The little crocodiles are too cute and the flower ones are so pretty.  Serious cute overload happening here, I think!  Hello Shiso is by a mama of two who says she adores creating well-made, fun accessories for boys and girls from her studio in sunny California.  Head to Hello Shiso to see all the accessories and don’t miss their beautiful bibs too.

A vintage dream…

"vintage baby crib"

I’m always dreaming of how I’ll decorate the next house we move to.  We have no plans to move right now but that doesn’t stop me.  My most frequent daydream is about my daughters room.  I change my mind daily about which pieces of furniture I want for her room, but I never change my mind about the style of decor.  It’s going to be vintage; possibly vintage with modern accents but mostly old.  And today I’ve found a shop where I’m lusting after all their vintage furniture.  From their school desks, to kids chairs and even their vintage cribs {though I don’t have a tiny baby}, I want it all.  I mean how gorgeous is that pink crib?

"vintage rattan crib"

And then there’s this minty green child’s desk and chair set… luckily it’s sold otherwise I might have been on my way to France to buy it!  L’Atelier du petit parc really do find some exquisite pieces but since they’re all one off’s they get sold quite quickly.  They do keep getting new pieces so it’s a question of checking back regularly.  Visit their shop to see all that’s currently available while I go off to daydream some more.
