How to make your home feel more personal

December 5, 2025

Nothing says home more than a few personal touches. My decor style leans warm Scandinavian minimal but that doesn’t mean I can’t inject my personality into my home. There is a bit of a myth out there that minimal homes lack personality but that’s not true at all. So here are a few simple and quick ways to that I use to make my home feel more personal to me and you can too.

Start With What You Already Love

You probably already have things that make you smile, no matter how unusual it is or whether anyone else would like it or understand it. But whatever it is, from an old mug that you love using every day to favourite books and art to some random pebble you picked up after a day at the beach, they’re the things that tell your story, so it’s important they have a place in your home.

A lot of people try to hide these things away because they think they don’t fit the decor, but the truth is, those things are the decor – or at least should be a part of it. You just need to give them a proper home, like a shelf, a hook, a cabinet, and so on. The fact is, a personal home needs to include all the things you already love.

Mix Textures And Layers Instead Of Matching

Yes, perfectly coordinated rooms always look lovely, but do they always feel lovely? Do they always feel warm? The honest answer is no, and what’s the point of a lovely looking room that no one wants to spend any time in because it’s uncomfortable and cold?

Adding things like a soft throw (even if it doesn’t match anything), an old side table you picked up from an antiques store just because you liked it, a basket to gather all the odds and ends in, and so on, makes sense and also makes the place a lot more welcoming and personal, which is what it’s actually all about.

Show Your Memories

You don’t need an entire wall of photos if that’s not your style, but having a few visible memories around the house can completely change things, and it could be as simple as a small frame on your bedside table, a picture inside a cupboard to make you laugh, or a holiday memory that you don’t want to forget, for example.

Having a family photoshoot can be a great idea if you want some more photos to have around the place. These photos don’t have to be stiff and formal, and can be a lot of fun, so not only will you have the photos, but you’ll have the memory of the day to enjoy too as a bit of a bonus.

When you put even a few things in your home that really matter to you and don’t worry about matching everything up, the entire place becomes instantly more personal, and that’s exactly how a home should be.
