"DIY wooden necklace ideas"

I’ve long been a fan of Merrilee Liddiard who writes the creative kids craft blog called MerMag.  She has now published a book full of the most fun crafts to make with your kids.  The thought behind the book is that we can make toys and fun things for our kids just like our grandparents did.  Everything doesn’t have to be bought but instead it’s all about engaging with your kids to create playful things where the making part is just as important as the playing.  Being the stylish mum that she is, Merrilee goes a step further with her book.  While it’s all about kids crafts it’s beautifully presented with thought given to the clothes the kids wear, the interiors and every detail so that it’s a book you can happily display on your coffee table.

The book is called “Playful: Fun projects to make with + for kids” and has a big range of crafts including toy making, paper crafts, making dressing up stuff and lots more.  Some of my favourite crafts include those cute wooden necklaces (pictured at the top) and those giant animal cutouts.  That tiger pinata looks really fun for a party too.  There are many crafty mums out there but the reason I especially love Merrilee’s creations is because everything is do-able by non-crafty mums like me and it’s very easy to genuinely involve kids and let them do a lot of it.  Also, you never need ridiculous amounts of materials or complex tools.  And besides all her crafts look so beautiful don’t you think?

"classic literature books for 10 year olds"

Once the school term starts, so do the birthday parties.  Come September, I am on the hunt for gifts and this year I am trying hard to be organised.  That means finding a few nice gifts and ordering them now so I don’t have a huge panic the day before each birthday party that ends in me paying crazy shipping prices for next day delivery.  One of my favourtie gifts for kids is books.  While on the hunt for some new books, I came across these timeless classics with the most beautifully illustrated covers and I thought they would make beautiful gifts.

Anya and her friends are a bit young for these books but Anya has older cousins and sometimes gets invited to her friends older sibling’s parties.  So I end up looking for gifts for a range of ages and I thought I would share them here in case you do too.  These classic books are a great way to introduce 8-12 years olds (depending on the book) to literature and are the kind of books that are kept forever.  Over the years there have been many different covers for these books, but when I saw these ones illustrated by Anna Bond, I loved them.  There are four classics in this range and each cover is illustrated in the prettiest colours with beautiful drawings that make you want to pick up the book and get reading.  All the books also come with matching bookmarks. Wouldn’t they look lovely on a shelf or on a table?  And besides, what can be nicer than giving a child a timeless gift that will last forever?

These classics will be available from October but can be pre-ordered now.  And dare I say it, but I will – I am also thinking of these as lovely Xmas gifts.

The Summer holidays have been here for a couple of weeks now and are a welcome break from the routine.  With the beautiful UK weather, we’ve been indulging in lots of outdoor time.  But since I work from home, I can’t take Anya out morning to evening every day as I need to find time to work.  If you work from home, you’ll know that the constant questions, demands for food and expressions of boredom make working nearly impossible or at least means you take three times as long to do anything!  While the TV and ipad are good at keeping her distracted, I like to use these in moderation.  So instead I’ve been stocking up on a few creative little activities which I’ve started giving her when she needs something to do.  Nothing complicated, just the very simplest little things I’ve bought which she can create with by herself.  I thought I would share the three that have been the biggest hits so far:

"best activity books for children"

Let’s Make Some Great Fingerprint Art is such a fun book.  The book is packed with loads and loads of ideas for making art with your fingers.  All you need is a colourful inkpad and a pencil to complete the pictures you create.  Anya loved this book and takes it out nearly everyday since I gave it to her.

"indoor-Summer-holiday-activities"

I spotted this massive jar of beads in Ikea a while ago.  They’re not exactly beads but mini tube shaped bits that Anya has used for all sorts of creations.  From making jewellery to sticking them on paper to make pictures, this jar has so many uses.  Anya has also used these beads to make up counting by colours kind of games.  But be warned, every time they come out, you’ll be treading on little bits of plastic for days to come!

"ways to keep kids occupied in Summer holidays"

This last one was a bit of an impromptu made-up thing but Anya loved it so I thought it was worth sharing.  I needed to get on with some urgent work so needed her occupied.  I just made a huge sheet of paper, pulled put some poster paints and told her to have fun.  She ended up painting with her fingers and had a ball.

How do you keep your kids occupied?  I’d love to hear your ideas.

"ramayana by sanjay patel"

Ramayana by Sanjay Patel is possibly one of the most beautiful kids books we’ve got.  While the book is based on Hindu mythology, it’s a simplified version of the story that any child can relate to.  The tale involves a prince, a 10 headed demon, a beautiful goddess like princess and some animals with super powers.  It’s about an adventure involving deceit, wit, friendships and good triumphing over evil.  The story is engaging and the illustrations are stunning.  Full of colour and detail, each page comes to life with pictures that tell the story as beautifully as the words.

Since it’s a long book we’ve been reading it in chunks.  We’ve already been through it twice and I know we’ll be reading it many more times in the coming years.  Anya absolutely loves the book and will often get it out herself to look at the pictures.

"ramayana by Sanjay patel"

Ramayana by Sanjay Patel is a book that can be appreciated by kids and adults alike.  It really is a must have book in any child’s library (Hindu or not) and also makes a beautiful gift.

"books for 5 year olds"

If I could, I would buy nearly every kids book that is published.  But since that isn’t possible, I have to pick and choose the ones that I think will be the most engaging, educational, funny, entertaining or just a sweet story.  Right now these 7 books are in my Amazon wish list so I thought I would share them here.  I’m very tempted by the exclamation book because it sounds like a fun and engaging way to teach Anya about punctuation especially since she is learning it at school too.  Have you bought any of these books?  I would love to hear what you thought of them?  These are the books I’m currently wishing for:

1.  Infographics: Human Body (I See What You Mean) by Peter Grundy
2. Exclamation Mark by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
3.  Mr Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown
4. The Hole by Oyvind Torseter
5. Gobble You Up by Gita Wolf
6. The Fir Tree by Sanna Annuka
7. My Father’s Arms Are a Boat by Stein Erik Lunde

"black and white clothes"

No matter how hard I try to change, I always come back to my absolute favourite colours of black and white.  Timeless, classic yet modern, always stylish… what’s not to love?  Here are some beautiful black and white things that I’m currently loving for mamas and kids.  Those dotty culottes and that flared dress are definitely on my wish list.

1.  flared cotton dress…  2.  mouse baby bonnet…  3.  vol 5 cereal mag…  4.  striped scraf…  5.  arrow print leggings…  6.  dotty baby culotte

The Day The Crayons Quit

"the day the crayons quit""the day the crayons quit book"

Each time we buy a new kids book I can’t decide who’s the most excited… me, my husband or Anya!  I know I can never wait to read it and neither can Anya so we usually read it within minutes of her coming back from school.  Last week we bought The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and we both loved it.  It’s such a sweet, fun and unusual story about a pack of crayons that decide they’ve had enough.  The drawings by Oliver Jefferes are colourful and childlike adding to the charm of this lovely book.  We liked it so much that we’ve already bought another copy to give as a gift.

Feeling fruity

"fruit decor for kids"

This whole fruit trend for kids isn’t going anywhere and I’m glad.  Fruits make a nice change from animals and with Spring coming (soon I hope), nothing says fresh quite like a fruit print does.  So here are a few of my favourite fruity pieces:

1.  Tomato poster…  2.  Cherries top…  3.  Fruit & veg picture book…  4. Fruity dolls…  5.  Apple board…  6.  Lemon baby trousers.

"lille nord nordic family magazine"

I’m so excited to tell you about a new print magazine that launched last week.  Lille Nord is a Nordic family lifestyle mag created by Monica Bach and Katrine Gitz both of whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the London launch.  The magazine explores modern family life in Nordic countries with a focus on decor, design, food and travel.

"nordic kids interiors magazine""lille nord magazine"

Discovering an inspired new magazine (or a new issue of an old favourite) is definitely one of life’s little pleasures.  And then taking 20 minutes out of a busy day to flip through it while sipping coffee is such a treat.  While doing exactly that with Lille Nord yesterday, I enjoyed the travel section where you get insider tips on places to see and eat when traveling as a family.  This issue gives you a day in Copenhagen which includes lots of play time as well as culture, food and shopping ideas.  My other favourite is the decor section with lots of inspiration for stylish kids rooms.  If you are a fan of Nordic style and all it has to offer, this magazine is very much for you.  At the moment Lille Nord will only be available through their own website but they’re looking for stockists around the globe.

"everything you can imagine is real"

Last week, as we were walking through Waterloo station Anya turned to me and said ‘I can see a pigeon riding the escalator’ and then broke out in a fit of giggles and started to create a little story from this thought.  Of course there was no pigeon on any escalator but that’s the thing about kids imaginations, there are no bounds and this still amazes me each day.  I’m often thinking about how I can feed and develop her imagination and I always find myself turning to books – story books, activity books, drawing books, craft books – the whole lot.  On the weekend I decided to look for some fun books for Anya to create, imagine and play with and I found 3 that I loved:
