Last evening we saw a rainbow and the colour that really stood out for me was indigo. It’s such a rich and striking colour that you can’t help but take notice of it. I think it’s a great colour to wear for for most skin tones and works so well with so many other colours. Take that colour block kids skirt – how stunning does the pink look against the indigo? Here are a few beautiful indigo clothes and accessories that I came across for mama and baby:
A couple of months ago I rounded up some of the best kids cushions around and many of my readers really enjoyed it so I thought I would do another round-up. Today though it’s about monochrome black and white cushions. I’m a big fan of cushions and believe you can never have too many. I love the idea of using a whole lot of black and white cushions in a kids room but if you like colour too, you can of course mix it up. Here are 6 black and white cushions that I’m loving at the moment:
A few weeks ago I attended a bloggers networking event at the National Portrait Gallery. I got to meet some inspiring bloggers and I also found out that the National Portrait Gallery has loads of free Summer events, workshops and activities for kids. Most of these events are held on Thursdays, Fridays and the weekend. So last Friday we decided to check one out. We attended a clay modelling workshop where kids get to pick a portrait from the gallery, draw it and then create a clay sculpture of it.
Even though the workshop was aimed at the kids, I totally got in to the clay modelling part and really enjoyed it too. And I wasn’t the only mum there that was almost taking over their child’s clay! Anya wasn’t crazy about the drawing bit but the clay modelling was a huge hit with her. The clay is cool and soft to the touch so it was lovely to feel and it was really fun to be able to mold and shape it and see a head and shoulders emerging. I’ll admit our end result looked a bit frightening but we had so much fun making it.
All the free kids activities on offer at the National Portrait Gallery are arty and creative which is why we were drawn to them in the first place. The clay modelling workshop is only one of many – others include colour workshops, using loom bands to create portraits, drawing sessions and more. Each year, as I discover more and more of the wonderful free events for kids in London, I feel so lucky that we can take advantage of these. Have you discovered any? Please do share in the comments so that others can try them too.
Jumpsuits seem to be all the rage at the moment and I’m really loving this Summer trend. Easy to wear, comfy and they look so cool too. My favourtie jumpsuit purchase this season has been this super soft animal-esque print one for Anya. In muted deep plums and pinks almost bordering on brown, the colours are unusual and the style is fitted yet relaxed. It’s the perfect Summer outfit to ‘jump’ around in and Anya loves wearing it. Now I’m on the lookout for a jumpsuit for me before this glorious Summer is over. Would you wear a jumpsuit? Any suggestions for a cool and flattering adult one?
Do you remember Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys? I was a big fan of the Nancy Drew books and I remember my brother being crazy about The Hardy Boys. I loved the spirit of adventure and what (at the time) seemed to be the most exciting mysteries ever. I think I even wanted to be her at one stage! Now, decades later this new Fall/Winter collection inspired by the whole Nancy Drew era has me smitten.
Looking at this collection, you can’t help but think spies and mysteries, detectives and top-secret missions from a by-gone era. How fun is that for any little kid? With a strong retro vibe and beautiful Autumnal colours, this latest collection is so playful and charming. I love everyday clothes like these that allow children to pretend play and transport themselves in to their very own make believe world.
Inspired by their daughters obsession with spies and mysteries, this husband and wife team created this newest collection. I’m a big fan of Misha Lulu already but this latest collection is my favourite!
Nothing says Summer to me more than fresh fruit. OK, maybe ice-cream too but fruit is up there with the Summeriest of Summer things. The bright colours, the fresh flavours, the juicy consistency all shout Summer. Apart from eating it, I love the idea of having a fruit themed Summer party for a kids birthday, a family gathering or just about any excuse you can come up with to have a party. I went looking for some fruit themed party inspiration and here are 9 of the best fruit decorations, cakes and more for a fabulously fresh n’ fruity Summer party:
A quick start to the week with these beautiful minimalist fairytale posters. I featured these minimalist posters a long while ago but since then, there is a whole new range out and I’m loving them even more. With this new range there are a lot of other accessories like cushions, bags and t-shirts featuring the visual but for me it’s the posters that are the best. For an even more minimal look, you can get these fairytale posters without the name of the fairytale printed on – it would make a great guessing game! Would you be able to guess just by the pictures?
With the Summer holidays in full swing, we have been enjoying some of the amazing family events on offer in London. So I thought I would share a few of our favourite picks over the month of August. The first one I wanted to share is Alice in Wonderland, the Opera which is held at Holland Park. I found out about it last year but didn’t manage to get tickets for the 2103 season. This year I was prompt and Anya and I ended up going twice!
Any concerns I had about a 5 year old child getting bored at the opera were completely unfounded. The opera was fantastic. Each and every child sat there completely captivated and even though it’s an opera, every word was clearly understandable. It’s ideally suited to 4 years and over but there were younger kids who were never once bored. It’s a very intimate show, where you sit extremely close to the actors so you really feel like you’re a part of it which just adds to the charm. My favourite character was the Queen of Hearts who was absolutely outstanding but the rest of the cast were great too. The show usually takes place in the Yucca Lawns of Holland Park, weather permitting (this is London after all!). We ended up seeing the show once inside due to rain and once outside. The outdoor performance is probably even better for kids as you get to follow the cast around the gardens but the indoor performance really wasn’t lacking in any way either.
Even though tomorrow is the last day of the show for this Summer, they will return for the 2015 Summer season but in the meantime there will be other events around the country as 2015 is the Centenary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland. So check Alice the Operafor updates on interim performances. Otherwise, if you’re going to be anywhere near London next Summer, definitely put it in your diary now for July 2015; it’s unmissable. I’ve mentioned how much the kids enjoyed it but I went with my mum and Anya and all three generations loved it equally. Family events like these are such a treat and I’m wondering how I’m going to top this one.
Disclosure: I bought tickets the first time and was invited the second time. I was going to share this even before I knew I was going to be invited because I loved it and highly recommend it.
My favourite Summer accessories are sunglasses without question. With so much choice out there for adults, there really is something to suit every face. But on the kids side, I used to struggle to find sunglasses that weren’t full of stars, hearts and sparkles. So I’m really glad that there are some seriously cool brands out there now. One of my favourites is this French brand of kids sunglasses that is funky and fun with a range of different styles to suit kids of different ages. This current collection has a retro vibe which I’m loving. Not only do these sunglasses look great, they’re also really durable and protect eyes even after long periods of sun exposure. Fashion, comfort and practicality all rolled in to one. Most of the pictures show girls but there are boys ones too or many unisex ones and they’ve even introduced a small range for women.

A few weeks ago we went strawberry picking. We had such fun and of course ended up coming back with a ton of strawberries. A few days later I had some friends and their kids coming over for dinner so dessert had to be strawberries and cream. Not only did I have the strawberries, I also wanted a very quick and easy dessert as I was short on time. But even with quick and easy, I wanted it to look nice and not just serve it as a bowl of strawberries and cream. So I decided to involve some meringues and some madeleines to dress up the dessert.
These ones were mini shop bought meringues topped with whipped double cream and chopped strawberries. No added sugar here as meringues are so sweet. It took me seconds to put together but still looks pretty.
With these ones I bought some delicious madaleines and layered these with the strawberries and cream, topped with a dusting of crushed meringue to add some crunch. I also chopped the strawberries and left them in a bowl with a little bit of sugar so their juices would run. I used these juices to keep the dessert moist, especially the madeleines. You can use strawberry liquor too but I had made these especially for the kids.
It’s not always possible to make desserts from scratch so I’m totally in to using shop bought stuff and putting my own touch on it. These strawberries and cream went down a treat with both the kids and adults and my friends even commented on how lovely they looked. What are your favourite short-cut desserts?
