Ages ago I bought a large cardboard igloo for Anya.  I had stored it away and completely forgotten about it until we moved house a month ago.  As soon as she spotted it, she wanted to put it up and so we did over the Christmas holidays.  This igloo has become her favourite little space in the whole house.  She reads in there, plays in there, hides in there and even takes her quilt and pillow and has a little rest in there.  Of course any kid loves a ‘secret’ hiding place and this igloo has so reminded me of that.  Actually I don’t think you can ever be too young or too old to want a little hiding place!  So when we do up Anya’s room in our new home, I know that I will be creating a tipi corner for her.  While the igloo is lovely it is very large so a tipi will be far more practical as it doesn’t take up nearly much room.  With that in mind, I went looking for some tipi corner inspiration and here are my favourites:

"black and white tipi corner kids room"

I love the simplicity of this teepee and the way it has been decorated in shades of white and black with just a simple string of lights.  This might be for a kids room but it would look equally great in a living space if you wanted to create a cosy corner for all the family to enjoy.

"pink tipi for girls room"

This is such a gorgeous and girly room and the dusty pink teepee just adds to the feminine vibes of the room.  I love how most of the room is white but the pink teepee just adds that splash of colour.

While I always think I prefer plain coloured fabrics, it’s when I see prints and patterns mixed like this that I start re-thinking.  I love this printed teepee that looks so great with all the other patterns surrounding it.  This space works perfectly for a boy or girl so would be great for a shared room.

Teepee’s aren’t actually that hard to make so you could make your own and then mix and match a range of fabrics like they’ve done on this one above.   These pretty floral fabrics look great all together especially against the geometric rug and cushions.

Even if your child’s room doesn’t have space for a teepee, I really would be tempted to put one in a shared family space like a corner of the living room.  I think once we get Anya’s room done with a teepee in there, it won’t be just her using it – I can picture me spending hours in there playing games with her or just reading books to her.  Do you have a teepee in your home?

"black white and red kids room decor"

Today, lets take a break from the Christmas gift lists and look at some kids room inspiration.  We are moving house next week (eek!) and the new place needs to be done up from scratch.  It hasn’t been decorated in 40 years!  So my brain is swimming with all kinds of decor ideas which I’ve been collecting on my pinterest boards including ideas for Anya’s new room.  While I can’t seem to move away from the whole black and white colour scheme, I’m liking the idea of adding an extra pop of colour especially for a kids room.  Recently I came across the above room and it really inspired me to think about red as the extra colour.  Have you ever considered red for a kids room?  It’s not a colour I would choose as a main one as too much red can be overbearing for me but if used sparingly with lots of white and some black, it can look quite striking.  And red is a great colour for boy or girl so it would be a great choice for a shared room too.  Here are some of my favourite rooms with pops of red:

As these rooms show, you can add splashes of red in many different ways; one piece of red furniture, red bedding, red toys or even just a bold red poster that stands out will do the trick.  Because red is such a bright and vibrant color, you don’t need a lot of it to make an impact.  In the third picture I love the blue, black and white colour scheme which works so well with the bright red poster – something a bit different for a boys room.  And in the last picture just the smallest red accents look so great.  I am really liking this colour scheme for a kids room and maybe this will be the one for Anya’s room. What do you think? Would you consider red as an accent colour?

I spend half my life researching stuff on the net to share on this blog.  And often I come across delightful or funny little things that I want to share but they don’t really fit in to posts.  So once in a while I like to share them here.  My recent fun finds include this playful pear poster and here are the rest:

I love wallpaper.  It’s such a great way to brighten up a kids room or any room in your home especially if you want to change the look of the room without too much effort.  But wallpaper doesn’t always have to mean pasting it to a whole wall or the entire room; instead you can be as creative with it as you like.  You can make a feature wall, a focal point to highlight a part of the room or use it to create separate area’s within a room.  There are lots of fun and imaginative ways to use wallpaper in a kids room.  Here are 5 ways that make quite an impact:

Use different shades of the same wallpaper
This is a big room with lots of different areas and lots of furniture.  In this kids room using the same wallpaper in different shades really helps to bring the room together and make it feel like one space.  Also, by using the wallpaper sparingly it doesn’t take away from the bright, white feel of the room but instead the wallpaper draws your eye to certain areas especially the two panels at the end of the room.

Kids and babies don’t actually need a lot of space.  Their things need space but they are happiest in cosy little spaces.  So I’m really loving the idea of creating a little space for your child within your bigger space.  Maybe taking a corner of your living room and putting in a cute desk or carving out a small wall area in your bedroom and placing your new baby’s cot there.  I love that doing this allows you all to be in the same space but you can still be doing different things along side each other.  And this a great way to maximise the space in your home especially if it’s limited.  I’ve picked out a few inspiring examples of where this is done really well:

"creating a nursery corner in your bedroom"

When Anya was born, we didn’t decorate a nursery for her because we knew we wanted her to be in our room for quite a while.  So instead we decorated a small area of our room with a cot, a mobile, a storage basket and a poster.   That was not only much easier to do but it was also really nice to be all together.  I didn’t take any pictures at the time but I’ve found these two baby spaces that are lovely.

"create a nursery corner in your bedroom"

Just as these two beautiful nursery spaces pictured above show, you don’t need to take up too much room to create a little haven for your baby within your bedroom.  And you can easily choose a style to complement the rest of your room.

"vintage and modern desk spaces for kids"

Another great way to share your living space with your kids is to create a desk or play area in your living room, your kitchen or wherever else you spend a lot of family time.  I love the first picture that has used the corner of the living room so well and the washi tape house helps to creatively mark out the space.  But if you prefer to keep it simpler and use even less space, you could create a more minimal and contained spot like the second and third pictures.

When I enter a home where I know there are kids, I like to see some evidence of them.  I’m not talking about being untidy and having toys strewn all over the place, but of seeing a little play space or a shelf full of kids books and toys;  something like the spaces above.  Kids things add character and charm to a space and besides it’s lovely to be able to share all your living spaces as a whole family.  With the lovely and budget friendly kids furniture and decor available at the moment from high-street brands like George Home, there’s no excuse to hide it all away.

Going green…

May 8, 2014

"green kids rooms decor ideas"Lately I’ve seen lots of green kids rooms popping up around the web especially rooms using a bright forest green colour.  Many of the rooms use a lot of green and that just doesn’t work for me.  This shade of green is quite an overpowering colour so using it in abundance is overwhelming and almost hurts your eye.  But use it with caution and the room can look amazing like these four rooms above.

These rooms work because they have used lots of white to balance the bright green.  Also, while your eye is drawn to the bright green, all the rooms have used duller, more muted shades of green and used other colours too.  My favourite is the first room which uses lots of black and white which I really like with the green.  But all four are pretty cool.  I especially like this colour for a boys room as it makes a nice change from blue but it’s also a great colour choice for brother-sister shared rooms.  What do you think? Would you go for a green room?

"brinjal farrow and ball colour"

While I am normally very much a fan of neutral white walls and like to use objects and paintings to add colour, I went against my instinct and painted my hallway in a dark aubergine.  Despite myself, I love it!  I think it works because of the contrast with the bright white floors.  This got me thinking about rarely seeing kids rooms painted in bold, dark, statement colours and most of the time I can understand why.  Pale, light colours do make a space feel larger and brighter while dark colours can have the opposite effect.  But sometimes it’s fun to break from the norm and do something different.  And if done right, it can really work.  Here are 3 kids rooms that really make dark colours work in the space:

"purple kids room ideas"

Dark purple is not a colour you often come across but it totally works because it’s been complimented with lots of white.  I also love that the wall is a chalkboard wall making it even more fun. (via spearmint baby)

"blue room decor ideas boys"

In this room there’s no respite with white.  Instead it’s dark walls with dark furniture but by using similar tones, the room does come together and creates a moody effect which I like. (via cable & cotton)

"black and white decor ideas"

This room uses the darkest colour of all – black and it’s a jet black.  But I love how the black starts on the floor and goes only halfway up the walls.  An all black room would be oppressive but by doing it this way it really works and gives an unusual look.  Most dark colours paired with white or any pale colour would work well in this way.  (via Kotipalapeli)

Would you try a really dark colour anywhere in your home?  You never know, you may just love it.
