"black baby rooms"

Would you ever consider a black baby nursery?  While I’m a big fan of black and white baby nurseries, I’ve never gone for using using black as the dominant colour.  But recently I’ve been coming across a few black nurseries and I’ve found myself really liking them.  There’s something very dramatic about the look.  For a black nursery to work, using  the right amount of black with other shades and tones is important otherwise the room can look too dark and dingy especially if it’s a small room.  It’s probably not a look for everyone but for me, when done well, black can be quite stunning and even calming.  Does it work for you?  Here are some of my favourite black nurseries to help you decide:

"dark walls in a nursery"

The natural wood colours compliment the black beautifully and soften the whole look.  Cute monochrome blankets, toys and decorations work well here because the white in them stands out so well against all the black.

"how to use dark colours in a nursery"

Using a black wallpaper with hints of colour is a great way of adding a more subtle amount of black to a nursery.  You’ll still achieve the dramatic black look but in a more toned down way.  And here again the natural wood floors and cot add a lightness to the room as do the colourful decorations. In this room only one feature wall has been painted black while the rest of the walls and the floors are bright white.  Even with just one wall, the dominating colour is black and almost stands out more because of all the white surrounding it.  Some black furniture and various shades of gray complete the look of this modern black baby nursery. Instead of turning walls black, making the floor entirely black is another way to add a dramatic black look to a nursery.  This room looks light and bright but you still can’t miss the drama of the black floors.  And as all the decor in the room sticks to the monochrome colour scheme, it allows the black to dominate but doesn’t look oppressive.  (image via the designer pad)

"the best jungle themed kids room"

It’s Friday finally.  I wanted to end this week with some fun finds from across the web starting with this amazing jungle themed kids room.  If you’re going to create a themed room, this is how to do it!

Wondering how to store all those art masterpieces your kids create?  This free app will make it easy.

This is funny – peek-a-boo gone wrong.

Your kids want a car shaped bed but you’re not keen on the looks of them?  You’ll change your mind after you see these.

These glitter ice-cubes are so fun especially to add a bit of sparkle to a birthday party.

How many of these parenting lies have you told and here’s what you actually mean.

This has got to be the whackiest Halloween costume ever!

Have a great weekend friends.  What are your plans? I’ll mostly be working on my new project which I’m so excited about and can’t wait to share with you very soon. x

The cutest kids wallpaper

"childrens themed wallpaper""childrens themed wallpaper jungle""childrens themed wallpaper town"

If you read this blog regularly, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of wallpaper.  So when I came across this new adorable range designed by Swedish artist Ingela Arrenhius, it was love.  I’m already a big fan of Ingela’s colourful and cute illustrations which are available as kids posters but now you can have a whole wall full of her sweet art.

True to Ingela’s style, these wallpapers are playful with a fun retro vibe.  All the wallpapers (and there are many designs) come in 2 colourways with each one designed to tell a story – from life in a town to life in a jungle and even life in space!  My favourite is the picture frames wallpaper which I’m loving for a vintage inspired kids room.  The beautiful styling is by Mokkasin and the wallpapers are available from Photowall.

I love wallpaper.  It’s such a great way to brighten up a kids room or any room in your home especially if you want to change the look of the room without too much effort.  But wallpaper doesn’t always have to mean pasting it to a whole wall or the entire room; instead you can be as creative with it as you like.  You can make a feature wall, a focal point to highlight a part of the room or use it to create separate area’s within a room.  There are lots of fun and imaginative ways to use wallpaper in a kids room.  Here are 5 ways that make quite an impact:

Use different shades of the same wallpaper
This is a big room with lots of different areas and lots of furniture.  In this kids room using the same wallpaper in different shades really helps to bring the room together and make it feel like one space.  Also, by using the wallpaper sparingly it doesn’t take away from the bright, white feel of the room but instead the wallpaper draws your eye to certain areas especially the two panels at the end of the room.

A twin baby nursery

"boy girl shared nursery ideas twins"

I recently came across  a new nursery furniture range from Spain and I loved the modern lines and colourful accents.  The range consists of cribs like the ones pictured above, chests of draws in a range of sizes, striped teepees and more.  The nursery furniture has a contemporary vibe with unexpected little details like the angled legs and of course the cool colour accents.  I chose my two favourite colours to share but there are many more including a beautiful wood and white one.  This furniture is the the creation of one of my favourite Barcelona based shops for kids – if you are ever in Barcelona, do check out Nobodinoz but otherwise they are online too.

Rather than just show you the furniture, I thought it would be fun to create a baby nursery mood board and for a change I decided to go for a shared baby boy and girl nursery space – maybe for boy and girl twins.  Here’s where you’ll find all the stuff:

1.  mountain tops wallpaper | 2. pink, white and yellow pom poms  | 3.  fruit posters | 4.  bird mobile | 5. grey baby rabbit lamp | 6. brown bambi lamp | 7.  coloured wooden chests of drawers | 8. colourful flag garlands (these exact colours are no longer available but you can get similar)| 9.  wooden baby cribs with coloured base | 10. high chair with changeable inner seat | 11. baby quilts and bed set | 12. toy storage baskets | 13. floral print star cushion | 14.  fox and koala soft toy

"6 of the best black and white cushions for kids"

A couple of months ago I rounded up some of the best kids cushions around and many of my readers really enjoyed it so I thought I would do another round-up.  Today though it’s about monochrome black and white cushions.  I’m a big fan of cushions and believe you can never have too many.  I love the idea of using a whole lot of black and white cushions in a kids room but if you like colour too, you can of course mix it up.  Here are 6 black and white cushions that I’m loving at the moment:

1. sleepy head cushion | 2. polar bear cushion | 3.  smiley cloud cushion | 4.  miffy cushion | 5.  panda bear cushions | 6. mountain range cushion

"black and white room ideas for toddlers"

I think if I ever move to another career it would have to be something to do with decorating babies and kids rooms.  I love putting together inspiration and ideas for how to create a beautiful nursery space or a kiddy space.  My favourite style is Scandinavian and right now I’m really partial to black and white rooms especially with a subtle hint of another colour.  For this mood board I’ve added a dash of pink to brighten up the black and white.  Here’s where you’ll find the picks:

1. stars garland | 2. miffy lamp | 3. heart postcard | 4. cloud postcards and panda poster | 5. birch toddler and child bed | 6.  owl cushion | 8.  striped toy storage baskets | 9.  bunny and girl doll | 10.  beauty baby and jealous baby dolls | 11. trees duvet set

Sharing a room is fun when you’re a kid.  Sometimes though it’s not just about the fun but a necessity if you’re short on space.  While same sex shared rooms may seem easier to decorate, boy and girl shared rooms can also work really well with a little imagination and thought.  From creating a neutral space to having specific sides decorated differently I’ve rounded up 5 of the most beautiful unisex shared rooms to inspire you:

"unisex shared bedroom ideas"

Using lots of white in the room means you can add pops of colour with boy/girl specific accessories and toys just like they’ve done in the unisex shared room above.  With all the white in the room, no bright colour is off limits.

"unisex kids bedroom ideas"

Here the boys side is decorated in blue while the girls side is decorated in creamy florals.  The similar prints and complimentary colours bring the room together even though each kid has their own side.

"boy and girl shared bedroom ideas"

Grey is one of my favourite colours for any kids room including a shared bedroom.  I love the different beds and how they’ve used wall stickers to personalise each space.  This room is a unisex space but with the addition of accessories, toys and wall decorations it becomes more girly on one side and more masculine on the other.

"ideas for shared kids rooms"

An all white, minimal space is yet another way of creating a shared boy girl bedroom.  In this room, there is nothing too specific about each side except for a few soft toys on each bed.  The decor is simple and neutral to suit both sexes.

"decorating a room for a boy and girl sharing"

From all white and minimal, this is a room exploding with colour.  Bold, bright unisex colours thrown together create a great shared space for boy and girl.  There are no boy or girl sides here, just a complete shared space that works equally for either sex.

Something fishy…

"fish themed kids decor clothes"

Foxes, elephants, birds and bunnies are everywhere on kids things from their clothes to decor.  For a change, I love a bit of fish themed things and these are some my current favourites (especially those fish hair clips):

1.  tee with fish detail | 2.  fish hair clips | 3.  seahorse soft toys | 4.  whale print pyjamas | 5.  shark tee | 6. koi fish poster

When thinking about updating a kids room, you don’t always have to start from scratch.  There are lots of easy ways to add a fresh look without completely re-decorating and turning it in to a mammoth project.  One of my favourite ways to easily refresh a child’s room is turning the wardrobe in to a feature piece.  Wardrobes are one of the largest pieces of furniture in most bedrooms including kids rooms.  So instead of looking at them as boring must-haves, I love the idea of using the the wardrobe fronts as a space to be creative.  With a little bit of imagination, wardrobes can become a really fun feature piece in a kids bedroom.

Here are 5 fun ways to add a some personality to any wardrobe:

"ways to update an old wardrobe"

1.  A quick and easy, yet striking way to make your wardrobe feel very much a part of the room is to paint it the same colour as the wall.  This gives quite a dramatic look and works especially well with bold colours as opposed to whites or creams.

2.  Instead of creating a feature wall, turn your kids wardrobe in to one.  Wallpaper the doors in colours and styles that match the rest of the room decor.  As the image shows, using different but complimentary wallpapers is a good idea to keep it looking interesting.  I’m loving the vintage wallpaper look so much that I’m tempted to try it myself.

"how to customise your wardrobe"

3.  Wall stickers aren’t just for walls.  They a great option for almost anywhere including adding some fun to a wardrobe.  A simple white wardrobe can be transformed in to something unique.  And the best part of using stickers is that you can easily change the look as often as you like. Instead of stickers, for a really personal touch, you could even stick your child’s artworks on to the wardrobe doors making a little gallery space.

"how to update old wardrobes"

4.  This is such a great idea.  Paint the doors in chalkboard paint and your kids have a blank canvas.  Each day they can create a new master piece, rub it out and start again the next day.  And I’m sure this huge canvas will be a hit when your kids have friends over too.

5.  For a subtler look, wallpaper the inside of a wardrobe in a bold print or pattern so you can only see the splash of colour when the wardrobe doors are open.  You could also go one step further and paint the wardrobe in a complimentary colour or just stick with white for a more understated feel.

There are lots of ways to add your own personal touch to your kids room.  I especially like the idea of customising furniture because it means that you can bring an old piece back to life or you can buy an inexpensive piece of bedroom furniture from places like Homebase and give it your own creative touch.  It’s a fun project to let your kids get involved in and the best part is, it’s not permanent so you can change the look as often as you like.

This post is brought to you in partnership with Homebase.  All content, words and ideas are my own.  Thank you for supporting my work with carefully selected partners that support this blog.
