develop positive body image daughters

Hands up, who has daughters?

Why is it that when we meet a little girl we often comment on her hair, her dress or how she looks?  But when we meet a little boy, we almost never talk about appearance.  Instead, we will maybe ask them what sports they play, what their hobbies are or something along those lines.  For way too long, a woman’s appearance has mattered way too much and it’s ingrained in us.  I mean, how often do we still look in the mirror and criticise what we see?

homemade Chinese crispy duck

Who doesn’t love a good Chinese crispy duck?  We’ve been making our own homemade version for ages and I thought it was about time to share the recipe here.  This homemade version of crispy duck is far healthier than the restaurant version as it isn’t deep fried.  But it’s just as delicious.  And unbelievably easy to make.

So here are 6 of my favourite easy DIY cake toppers that anybody can do.  Yes anybody:

play area in a living room

Wouldn’t it be great if we all lived in extra large homes where we could turn one whole room in to a play room? Just imagine never having to see those toys strewn all over the living room.  Maybe some of you are lucky enough to have a dedicated playroom for your kids but for most of us the reality is that we share spaces as a family.  Living rooms and kitchens often double up as play spaces as well as homework spaces as well as entertaining spaces and so much more.  And actually, I love that.

mother daughter matching looks

A few years ago I bought a beautiful dull gold top.  From the minute I first wore it, Anya insisted she had to have the same.  She was only 3 years old.  Since then, she has often wanted us to wear matching clothes when we go out together.  Her sweet, sweet sentiment of wanting to be like her mama gives me a warm and happy feeling all over.  While I adore this sentiment, I can’t do full on matching mama and daughter style. Can you?  I can do complementary style yes, but matching head to toe, no. So recently, when Pisamonas offered to send us both a pair of shoes,  I thought this was the perfect opportunity for some similar mama and daughter style.  Both Anya and I opted for ballet pumps – she chose the sparkly pink ones while I opted for the black leather ballet pumps.

garlic prawn rice with broccoli

Who doesn’t love a delicious garlic prawns recipe? While I love garlic prawns on their own, I wanted to turn the dish into a one pot meal and so I decided to combine it with rice and veggies.  The result was this garlic, prawn, rice and broccoli dish that is all kinds of yummy and so easy to make for a quick mid-week one pot meal.

monochrome posters kids room

There are so many things that turn a house in to a home –  from books to souvenirs and everything in between. One of my must haves to make a house a home is art; lots of it and in every room.  I’m always looking to add to my collection of wall art and my latest find are these adorable black and white prints for a kids room.  How cute are they?

adjustable wall shelves

As your kids move beyond the baby stage, life starts zooming by even quicker than before.  I mean it feels like one minute they’re learning their ABC’s and the next they’re reading to you!  That phrase – ‘they grow up too quick’ – that only parents understand, has never meant more to me than now.  Knowing this, I’ve realised when decorating your kids room, you have to keep in mind that they grow so quickly.  Keeping this reality at the back of your mind will save you money, angst and the headache of re-decorating every year or two.  A while ago I shared some ideas on how to design a room your kids won’t outgrow and today I wanted to share this great shelving system that has so, so many possibilities.  As far as changeable, practical and adjustable wall shelves go, I don’t think I’ve seen better.

organic cotton dresses girls

Do you know Livly? Livly is a cool Swedish brand of organic cotton clothing for children and babies. What’s really great about them is that they make clothes like Anya is wearing which are comfy, soft and easy to wear, yet they are cool and stylish.  As soon as Livly sent us these clothes, Anya put them on and she didn’t want to take them off.  Since she’s had them, she reaches for either the leggings and tee or the dress every time they’re washed.  So it’s a good thing that these Livly clothes are designed to be washed and worn several times and they still look as good as new.

letters to my future self

Whenever we have school holidays coming up, I always try and order at least one new book for Anya.  It’s just something I started doing a while ago but now it’s become a holiday habit.  The holidays have somehow become my prompt to get her some new books and with half term coming up next week, I went looking.  I don’t always get a story book but it can be an activity book, a joke book, an art book or anything that looks interesting and will keep her occupied for a while.
